NBC/WSJ poll: Bush back in 30s; Dems favored for control of Congress
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15117698/from/RS.1/

WASHINGTON -

After what they have seen and heard over the past few weeks -- events including the news of a Republican congressman's improper correspondence with a teenage page and the recent release of journalist Bob Woodward's unfavorable portrayal of the Bush administration's handling of Iraq – respondents to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, by more than a 2-to-1 ratio, say they have a less favorable impression of the Republicans maintaining control of Congress.

What's more, a strong plurality believes the Iraq war is hurting the country's ability to win the war on terrorism, a significant shift from a month ago.

Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with the Republican Bill McInturff, says that there is the point in every election when it becomes crystallized for voters. And the events from the past week, he notes, could very well be that point for the upcoming midterms.

The news of a Republican congressman's improper correspondence with a teenage page and the recent release of journalist Bob Woodward's unfavorable portrayal of the Bush administration's handling of Iraq all seem to have taken a toll on President Bush and the Republican Party, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

4. It might be more than an alert
If they are desperate enough, and they are, I wouldn't put anything past them. Nothing, nada, nyet, nein.

9. Forget the Terra Alert....
This year, they're going to claim, unverifiably of course, that they've capture Bin Laden.

Bush already tipped his hand at a speech earlier this week when he told about being "hot on Bin Laden's trail."

I'll be happy if I'm wrong, but, I don't think so.

17. Isn't the Strategy Better to Have Bin Laden Still Out There
It would seem to me that after killing how many No. 2 guys? having Bin Laden caught would be anti-climatic. I think another attack or almost attack or a video of Bin Laden planning an attack is much more strategically helpful to Bush's base. Jmho.

5. I'll believe it when I see it.
And I won't feel safe until at least 2012 no matter what. It will take a long time to uproot their tentacles of evil.

20. Not because of the Mayan calendar...
But because whoever is elected in 2008 is going to be either making a bigger mess or trying to make a dent in cleaning the huge mess we already have on our hands. In 2008, if fundamentalist extremism and jingoism is not thoroughly in check, I will be paranoid that the PNAC will be waiting in the wings, ready to take over the government again in 2012.

We will not be safe until the American people are awake and this whole "post-9-11 mentality" is discredited.

10. Even if we win majorities...
in both houses. The Shrub administration will continue on its
monarchical way, using their strong-arm Gestapo tactics to
keep any and all information away from the American public as
long as they can. So can we really expect any significant
change before '08? Probably not.

16. I'm kinda hoping....
...Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld and Rice will conclude they've looted enough money out of the U.S. Treasury and they'll go someplace warm, wear sunglasses and drink drinks out of glasses with those little paper umbrellas, and leave the rest of us alone.

Somebody quoted Judy Tenuta earlier, "It COULD happen!".

18. You know,
I was sitting here a few moments ago with happy thoughts of a Dem Congress. One of the things that came to mind is that they could and should out-law the Prez signing statement as Bush has used it to circumvent laws meant to apply to the executive. My next thought was: What the hell, the asshole would just do a Prez signing statement excepting himself and the executive branch from that law.

Frankly, if there is a Dem Congress ~~ which looks very likely ~~ then IMO the ONLY way to get the Chimp under control is to impeach the bastard.

11. Is it me or does it seem as if the article is very reluctant to report
that Bush is once again declining?

..."But he points out that other measures in the survey, including Bush's standing, are relatively stable."

..."In the poll, Bush's job approval rating is at 39 percent among registered voters, a drop of three points since September, when his rating had increased to its highest level in months after he gave a series of speeches on national security leading into the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The three-point drop, however, is within the poll's margin of error of plus-minus 3.5 percentage points."

From what, his peak of 42/43% approval? A truly ringing endorsement by the public.

..."A week ago, the Bush administration declassified portions of a National Intelligence Estimate, which called the Iraq war a "cause célèbre" for Islamic militants (although the NIE also said that success in Iraq could reduce the number of them wanting to carry on the fight)."

Bah! They just can't stop stroking this administration. When are they going to realize this ship will go down, and them with it?

Olafr

P.S. Above italic emphasis mine.

12. while this is great news, we have to keep fighting
let's make sure that those who really feel that the country is faltering under GOP leadership are the ones who get to the polls.

I think I'm going to call my county Democratic committee and see if I can't volunteer to drive people to the polls.
