Democrats say the Bush administration is trying to keep its thumb on an open discussion about what to do in Iraq.
In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, the co-chairman of the Democratic National Committee’s Veterans and Military Families Council said the Bush administration’s “stay-the-course” policy is failed and the administration is trying to shut down public discourse on Iraq.
“All we get is rhetoric and no solutions,” said Don Fowler, a former chairman of the DNC, in a conference call. He said the Democrats don’t support a “cut-and-run” policy, but that what is needed is an international force and “a plan of exit for most of the troops.”
Fowler appeared on the conference call with two Democratic military veterans who are running for office, Eric Massa from New York and Tim Walz from Minnesota. Massa is a former Navy commander who was a military aide to retired Army Gen. Wesley Clarke, and Walz is a retired Army command sergeant major with the Army National Guard.
