(Senator) Burns (R) tells Hotshots they did a "poor job" in Billings fire
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 02:50 PM by Divernan
So here's a fat-ass Republican Senator chewing out a bunch of firefighters who just came to his state and risked their lives for $8-12 an hour! The state of Montana owes these firefighters a public apology. If the esteemed Senator had a problem with policy decisions by the Montana state Department of Natural Resources, he should have taken it up with them. What kind of stupid, inept moron can be a U.S. Senator and not understand that the decisions he's arguing with were not made by the firefighters in the field?

Burns tells Hotshots they did a ‘poor job’ in Billings fire
By JENNIFER McKEE - IR State Bureau - 07/27/06
HELENA — Republican Sen. Conrad Burns chastised a group of firefighters over the weekend for doing a “poor job” dousing a 92,000-acre blaze near Billings, a state report shows. Burns and the firefighters — members of the Augusta Hot Shots from the George Washington and Jefferson national forests in Virginia — were at the Billings Logan International Airport each awaiting flights, according to Burns and Forest Service representatives.

Burns approached the firefighters and told them they had “done a poor job” and “should have listened to the ranchers,” according to a report prepared by Paula Rosenthal, a state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation employee who was sent to the airport to speak with the senator.

Rosenthal wrote in her report that she received word of an “altercation” occurring between Burns and the hot shot crew. The crew had been in Montana working on the Bundy Railroad Fire near Worden. The 92,000-acre timber, grass and sagebrush fire was contained on July 19 and the 368 people who came to fight it began dispersing a few days later.

“The toughest part of the conversation was the point where the senator was critical of a firefighter sitting across from us in the gate area,” Rosenthal’s report reads. “I offered to the senator that our firefighters make around $8 to $12 an hour and time-and-a-half for overtime. He seemed a bit surprised that it wasn’t higher.”

(End of excerpt)
Here's a good comment from the news source.
Conrad Burns was totally out of line for his behavior and comments to fire fighters at the airport in Billings. Those fire fighters are out there doing an extremely difficult, stressful job for an inadequate wage that the government should be embarrassed about. They are not the ones who make policy or decide where the fire is going to be fought. They go where the fire bus takes them, do what the crew boss tells them, and put out fire, where ever that happens to be. Just because Burns has been getting his ear bent by his ungrateful, ranching cronies, doesn't mean he has any business even speaking to those fire fighters except to get down on his knees and thank them for coming to Montana and doing the difficult, stressful job they do. This just points out that Conrad Burns is not fit to continue in his position in the U.S. Senate. He is NOT representing this state and ALL its citizens -- only his own agenda and that of his like-minded cronies. He should be ashamed of himself and he needs to apologize profusely and publicly to those fire fighters as well as to every one else.

3. OMG. Is he so stupid that he would insult firefighters coming to fight
fires for him??? Did he forget they contained the fire? Is he too stupid to understand why they would evacuate landowners or ask them to back off from fighting the fire? What a dumb ass! They should insist he "volunteer" next time so that he knows what a wildfire is.

10. I'm tempted to say "unbelievable"
But with all the shit the GOP has stirred in the last 15 years, I guess I just don't put it past them to call out firefighters right to their faces. The fact that Burns didn't leave the confrontation feet first on an ambulance gurney speaks to the dignity and professionalism of the Hot Shots, who obviously are well-schooled in ignoring the brayings of a jackass.

20. Senator Burns, we Virginians are waiting for your apology
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 08:39 PM by Penndems
Like good neighbors, we sent our firefighters to your state to assist in containing the forest fires that are engulfing the beautiful forests outside of Billings. Since two of Montana's leading industries are wood and lumber products, you should be particularly grateful for our help.

But no, Senator - your behavior was extremely coarse and low-class. Instead of a simple "thank you for your assistance", you launched into a tirade, berating and belittling our firefighters. You, sir, are nothing but a jackass in a six-hundred-dollar suit.

The people of Montana deserve better than you representing them in Washington. Here's hoping you enjoy your retirement after November 7th, when you are replaced by a better man.

Sincerely yours,
A Twelfth-Generation Virginian

Sen. Conrad Burns Apologizes for Criticizing Firefighting Team for Their Work on Montana Blaze
By JOHN MacDONALD

HELENA, Mont. Jul 27, 2006 (AP)— Sen. Conrad Burns apologized Thursday for criticizing a firefighting team for their work on a blaze in southern Montana, saying his frustration came from a meeting with upset landowners.

Burns confronted members of a Virginia firefighting team at an airport and told them they had done a "poor job," according to a state official's report obtained Thursday.

"In retrospect, I wish I had chosen my words more carefully," Burns said in a statement. "My criticism of the way the fire was handled should not have been directed at those who were working hard to put it out."

Members of the "hotshot" wildfire crew said Burns confronted them in the Billings airport Sunday while they were awaiting a flight home, according to a report by Paula Rosenthal, a state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation employee.

23. My grad school roomies fought forest fires
And it's grueling work. I wonder which ranch/land owner lit a fire under Burns' contemptible ass; what a louse to throw them under the rug when, many times, those Hot Shots are fighting an almost impossible battle under extremely dangerous conditions. Maybe Burns, when out of office, can be parachuted in, join the crew and see what it's like -- won't hold my breath on that.

Anyone ever read "Young Men and Fire"? A great book about forest fire fighting, and it shows how the right conditions can lead to catastrophic incidents out in the field.

25. That would be the final nail
Just about everybody in Montana owes their town or home to a firefighter. Even when you might wish they'd fought a fire differently, you don't bitch out the crew, everybody knows that. This is the kind of idiot behavior that everybody will understand. Of course he's always been a major asshole, but man, I didn't think he was this stupid.
