Bush, allies seek consensus on Mideast

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 38 minutes ago

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - World leaders, mindful of turbulent Mideast politics, struggled Sunday to draft a consensus statement on escalating warfare between Hezbollah and
Israel, a conflict that dominated talks at the summit of wealthy nations.

Russia said it would evacuate its citizens from Lebanon, where Israeli bombs are falling in response to rocket attacks by the terrorist group Hezbollah.
President Bush and European allies had differing views on who should be blamed, but urged both sides to restore calm.

Bush had been backing Israel's right to defend itself, but on Sunday he also urged Israel to show restraint.

"Our message to Israel is, look, defend yourself," Bush said. "But as you do so, be mindful of the consequences. So we've urged restraint."

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the fighting between Israel and Lebanese guerrillas could ignite a wider conflict, and said the international community had to use all means possible to end the violence immediately.

5. Bush's initial glibness responding to M.E. crisis feels like his Katrina
response. The disconnectedness and the lag time is the same. Things just got worse and worse quickly while nothing was done.

6. And both were similar to his response on 9/11.
As I recall, President Clinton was halfway around the world when it happened and STILL beat the fool back to NYC. Seems like Bush is always late to the scene, doesn't it?

7. The US vetoed any attempt to try and bring about a ceasefire
so bush's statements at the G8 are pure bullshit, as usual, imo. He will try and block any reasonable possibility of defusing the crisis, it is as simple as that.

9. Bush... Allies????
What allies would those be? Everybody counting on our economy is scared shitless.... the US is bankrupting itself. Everybody who needs oil is distancing themselves from the US.... they don't want to be around when the oil suppliers cut the US off.

All the US has done in Iraq is to convince the whole world, and the ME in particular, that the US is a paper tiger. Everybody knows that a bunch of irregular fighters have tied up and stopped the vaunted US military. The US military has pissed off the locals, rather than democratized them. The world has also learned that US weapons and systems and tactics don't work.

* has destabilized the entire area and stirred up the whackjobs in every Muslim country.

Allies like Saudi Arabia are one revolt from becoming another Iran.

What a clusterfuck!
