House GOP to focus on abortion, guns
WASHINGTON - House Republicans intend to hold votes this summer and fall touching on abortion, guns, religion and other priority issues for social conservatives, part of an attempt to improve the party's prospects in the midterm elections.

The "American Values Agenda" also includes a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage — which already has failed in the Senate — a prohibition on human cloning and possibly votes on several popular tax cuts.

"Radical courts have attempted to gut our religious freedom and redefine the value system on which America was built. We hope to restore some of those basic values through passing this legislative agenda and renewing our country's commitment to faith, freedom and life," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said Tuesday.

---

"Family, faith, patriotism and hard work bind us together as Americans. Our laws should reflect those priorities, and House Republicans are committed to the American Values Agenda, policies that stress the core values on which our nation was built," said Rep. Roy Blunt (news, bio, voting record) of Missouri, third-ranking member of the leadership.

---

An abortion-related proposal would require that some women seeking to end their pregnancies be informed the procedure "will cause the unborn child pain" and they have the option of receiving drugs to reduce or eliminate it. A separate measure would ban human cloning, a prohibition that cleared the House in the previous Congress.

9. Get in line and take a number
This barefaced pandering is revolting. They've had six years to ramrod this stuff and would have had a much better chance of doing it in 2002. They're doing this for one reason, and one reason only: unless they get the single-issue "We Vote Pro-Life (Even For Corrupt, Hypocritical, War-Mongering Thieves and Bastards)" knee-jerk types to show up at the polls, they are in deep, deep trouble. They need to make it close enough for Diebold to steal the elections; if they can't, and the elections get stolen anyway, everyone will know it - and being un-elected will seem far preferable to the fate that awaits them then.

Peace
PsA

5. Guns will not be an issue if the Dem party supports its platform
that says "We will protect Americans' Second Amendment right to own firearms, and we will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and terrorists by fighting gun crime, reauthorizing the assault weapons ban, and closing the gun show loophole, as President Bush proposed and failed to do." See http://www.democrats.org/pdfs/2004platform.pdf

The Dem party should demand each Dem candidate that supports banning handguns or all guns state that they do not support the Dem Party Platform. That will be a start in changing the public perception that the Dem party is a bunch of gun-grabbers.

7. They're focusing on all the things the general public supports. They may
win points with their base, but they also may encourage more of the general public to vote against them - obviously, they're wasting time and avoiding far more important issues.

8. Politics is about getting elected so you can focus on important issues.
Some prominent Democrats have forgotten that basic truth and that's why we've lost the Senate, House, and Presidency.

When we can prove to the majority of voters that we will support their issues, then we will regain control of our government.

10. Oh, the irony - abortion and guns...
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 09:44 PM by Skip Intro
I think this might be a sign as to how well rove's "play up the invasion/occupation of Iraq" strategy might be working.

at any rate, its all they have left...

11. Democrats in the House should boycott these stupid votes
Every Democrat in the House should stay out of the chamber when Hastert schedules these stupid votes. Why should any Democrat participate in Rove's transparent political theater? Let the GOP have their silly meaningless votes to whip up the cretins in their base, but without a single Dem playing along. Democrats should stay in their offices doing constituent services so they can say that they continued to do work that benefited the citizens while the Republicans played games with the government.
