Lieberman's 'Little Fun' in Animated Ad Rankles Opponent
Lieberman's 'Little Fun' in Animated Ad Rankles Opponent

By Zachary A. Goldfarb

A couple of old hands in Connecticut politics are ganging up on Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D).

George Jepsen, a former chairman of the state Democratic Party and former state Senate majority leader, on Monday endorsed the candidacy of Ned Lamont, a businessman who is closing in on Lieberman in the polls. Lamont's support has come largely from antiwar activists angry with Lieberman's stance on Iraq. Jepsen's endorsement follows one from former senator Lowell P. Weicker Jr., who was defeated by Lieberman in 1988.

Lieberman's campaign recently posted a Web ad poking fun at the Weicker-Lamont alliance. "Remember Lowell Weicker? Well, bears never forget. He's never gotten over losing his Senate race to Joe Lieberman," says the ad, which features animation of a bear. "But instead of coming out of hibernation, he's sent his bear cub, instead -- Ned Lamont."

Lieberman spokeswoman Marion Steinfels explained the ad as having "a little fun with the Greenwich billionaires uniting against Senator Lieberman." Lamont spokesman Liz Dupont-Diehl called the ad "pathetic."

Not a smart move pissing off a ""a little fun with the Greenwich billionaires " even if they were not supporting Lamont before they will be now....

5. The ad rankled no one, but of course the WaPo tries to say it did
In fact everyone was embarrassed for Joe because he made such an amateurish ad. It made Joe appear to be a junior league player.

8. What a bizarre headline!
Rankles?! The Lamont campaign LOVED that ad. It would be impossible to conceive of an ad that would ever benefit an opponent to the extent that that ad has. It is a classic.

6. I hope Lieberman loses..........
so Dems can send a clear message to other Dems that warmongering doesn't belong in our party, nor does kissing up to the Repugs.

9. Lieberman has to go!
The Republican man that owns the horse I care for, told me last weekend that there are a few Democrats he respects, and one is Lieberman. I just looked at him and shook my head! I told him that if it was in our power, and we hope it is, that Lieberman will no longer represent the Democratic Party.

10. Utter Bullshit
Please take a moment to respond to the WP Ombudsman.

This is a classic case of a reporter "inventing" the news and not reporting it. In this article, Lamont was neither directly or indirectly (through a campaign spokesperson) asked to comment upon the ad -- yet we're being told that the ad "rankled" him. Rankled? Whatever.

This headline is pure fiction and any news outlet that does this needs to be called on the carpet.

Please note that I'm more or less neutral on the subject of Lieberman/Lamont -- I just think we need to keep the media on a much tighter leash. It's worked for the right-wing and it can work for us.

13. Sad, Sad, Sad
When a former VP candidate can be vilified over one issue. Yes, he is out of the tent on this one, but you keep piling on a man that has given the majority of his life to the party. Eventually the tent will be so small that only swollen heads will fit!

18. LOL, one issue?
Betrayed Bill and Hillary Clinton during the impeachment idiocy by being too willing to be a Democratic scold.

Repeatedly gave air to Republican talking points on family values--and still does.

Was a sole Dem voice arguing in favor of school vouchers and changes to Social Security.

Hedged his bets, running for both VP and Senator from CT at the same time. Some might call that prudence, but it seemed like lack of confidence in the grand prize to me. If he was so worried about losing that seat to Republicans, he should have turned Gore down.

Entered the convention hall in LA just in time to completely drown out Stephen Hawking as, via video, he began to appeal to what was left of Americans' intellectual pride on behalf Al Gore and against the know-nothing Bushists. Kind of prophetic, when you think about it.

Forced the 2000 ticket rightward. After Bush was selected, Lieberman said things turned out as they had because Gore had talked too much like a populist.

Singlehandedly decided to concede the absentee ballot issue to Republicans early on in the post-election. His eagerness to score yet another point with the right wing blinded him (to bend over backwards in {underserved} fairness to him) to the legitimate charges Gore's team was making about Republican dirty tricks sending ballots to the military overseas after the election and having their ops overlook the lack of postal marks on them when they flowed in a week or more later.

Within a year after Bush v. Gore, Lieberman cited the Ninth Circuit's decision against the Pledge as the worst court decision "in memory."

Support for the war. Support for the war. Support for the war.

14. "Rankles"?
Not sure that's quite the verb the Post could have/should have used. Maybe they're outsourcing their headline writing to folks whose first language isn't English? I think "amuses" or "causes opponent to fall on the floor, helpless with laughter at its sheer ineptitude." But that second choice might not fit the column width.
