BAGHDAD (Reuters) - If Iraq's new Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki wants to deliver on his promises of "national reconciliation", he will have to talk to insurgents he has so far spurned, Sunni officials said on Monday.
A source in Maliki's office said that his Shi'ite-led government is considering inviting certain members of Sunni insurgent groups to national reconciliation talks next month.
Leaders will meet to agree on a definition of "resistance" groups and then some members of guerrilla groups will be invited to take part in the talks, which were delayed for one month to July 22, he said.
But it is not clear whether this signals that Maliki's government is softening its position on Sunni Arab insurgents seeking to overthrow it.
