WASHINGTON -- The first trial arising from the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal
is moving into a new phase, with prosecutors calling on witnesses to corroborate e-mails
detailing the lobbyist's requests for help from a top procurement official in the Bush
administration.
Among those on the witness list is Neil Volz, a former congressional staffer and
ex-Abramoff lobbying partner who recently pleaded guilty in the case and is cooperating
with prosecutors.
The trial was resuming Tuesday.
Volz was on an Abramoff-organized weeklong golfing excursion to Scotland in August 2002.
Participants included defendant David Safavian, who at the time was the chief of staff
to the administrator of the General Services Administration.
