Big Oil Launches Attack On Al Gore
Edited on Wed May-17-06 06:45 PM by cain_7777
Big Oil Launches Attack On Al Gore
Today, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) will unveil two 60-second TV ads focusing on what it calls “global warming alarmism and the call by some environmental groups and politicians to reduce fossil fuel and carbon dioxide emissions.” The ad, which will be aired in more than a dozen cities across the country, is being released just a week before the May 24th opening (in LA and NYC) of Al Gore’s new movie on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.

Who is CEI? The Washington Post explains:

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, which widely publicizes its belief that the earth is not warming cataclysmically because of the burning of coal and oil, says Exxon Mobil Corp. is a “major donor” largely as a result of its effort to push that position.

CEI also gets funding from other oil companies through the American Petroleum Institute.

Exxon documents reveal the company gave $270,000 to CEI in 2004 alone. $180,000 of that was earmarked for “global climate change and global climate change outreach.” Exxon has contributed over $1.6 million to CEI since 1998.

This is absolutely disgusting. I have been boycotting Exxon, BP, Chevron, and Mobil for the past year but now I am becoming active and telling everyone I know to do the same and boycott these bastards. They want the polls to melt so they can drill, and they don't care how many of us die so they can line their pockets. We need to cut these people out of the energy sector by transferring to clean renewable energies. We need hardline policy against these pricks and Gore is the man to do it. Their scared of Gore and for good reason, he'll put them out of business, and I say good riddance. Let Exxon run their add, because all the negative backlash against it might even help get Gore elected.

edited to rant on these bastards a little more.

1. they are wasting their money
Americans are not going to stop driving their SUVS: as many right here at DU have stated, it is their God-given right to do so.

7. Yes they will if gas price goes to $10.00 a gallon.
And I hope they do! I can't stand the fact that, corporation think, they own us and can as well as they please. This shit is going to crumble... history repeat it self.

9. hahaha
if only that were true!

Please, no matter WHAT anybody does, the world is going to run out of oil in the next 30-40 years - and oil companies are going to make a LOT of money the whole way down...

what is sad is that British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell are very large investors (in Europe mostly) of alternative power (solar being a prime example) - OUR native oil companies seem more interested in playing politics to get people in office who will use our huge military to try and just take the oil - Chevron at least has acknowledged the Peak Oil problem - but Exxon Mobil just wants to lie to us the whole way down...and say to us "keep buying the Humvees folks, don't change your lives and move closer to work! Do NOT ride a bike or walk! EVERYTHING IS FINE AS LONG AS YOU KEEP BUYING THE PRECIOUS JUICE!"

12. Its a tough situation that we are forced into
BP has pushed their green ads for years now, but the refinery in the Gulf coast is the most polluting in the Nation. All the fines and penalties incurred are never paid either.

4. if Gore is as insignificant as the right-wingers claim ...
.... why are they so worried about him? They've said over and over again that his "ranting" is "scaring people away".

If that were the case, there would hardly be a need to rush out expensive ads trying to counter him, would there!

8. Spin, spin, spin...
They try to belittle him because he is of such influence. Public awareness of global warming is growing, and although Repukes are trying to keep america stupid, people are learning. It's sad that Gore has to dumb it down enough for people to understand by having to put the information into a movie, but I think that is the only way America will get it before its too late.

11. someone should challenge them to drink their own pee!
I've heard various anti-science people claiming that "carbon dioxide is perfectly safe because it's something that your own body produces". I've always wanted to remind them that urine also fits that description.

(And in sufficient quantities, the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds it contains can create problems in the environment, if it's not treated ...)

20. I have heard of some rituals or natural health healing techniques.........
that request the drinking of one's own urine. Mostly one would think in the short term one's own urine would be pretty much innocuous, considering it came from the purification of one's own kidneys. Probably long term build up would be a problem no doubt.

 Maybe their final game plan is to fill the entire atmosphere with CO2 -- then the plants shall inherit the earth.

14. The credibility of the oil industry
is at -100 right now, I would guess. People are so pissed off about the cost of oil that once it is disclosed who is funding the commercials, they will get as little reaction as possible. This is my opinion, but unless they manage to hide their involvement, they won't get shit out of these ads.
