Study conducted in Nevada casinos claims DNA risk from secondhand smoke
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Five years of research led by a University of Nevada, Reno department head in Reno and Las Vegas casinos have concluded there is a direct correlation between exposure to secondhand smoke in the workplace and damage to the employees' DNA.

"The more they were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, the more the DNA damage, and that's going to lead to a higher risk of heart disease and cancer down the road," said Chris Pritsos.

Funded by a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, the clinical trial followed 125 employees who work on the gambling floors of casinos in both northern and southern Nevada.

The subjects of the study were nonsmokers who were not exposed to secondhand smoke in their households, said Pritsos, chairman of the nutrition department at UNR.

It's not easy getting cancer without damaging DNA.

3. Been in a casino? Tobacco smoke MUTATES you!
It turns anyone exposed to it too long to little grey-haired ladies holding paper cups, putting quarters in slot machines. You thought those were retirees? Some of them were 23 years old, and some of them used to be men!

Seriously, what else is there to analyze in Nevada?

4. Glad this is such a joke - why should someone else's habit
force the employees to risk their health! This story inspired me to fire off a letter to my state senator in PA to catch up with many other states and bar smoking in all public places including bars, restaurants and in PA casinos which will soon be opening.

I'm glad the story on this I read pointed out that a possibility that caused Dana Reeve's cancer is the fact that she sang in smoky clubs.

5. I am SOOOOOO glad that smoking is barred in all workplaces here
in CA (except hookah lounges and cigar shops). For a long time bars were also exempted, but several years ago they extended the ban to all bars/nightclubs. Hooray for workers' rights!!!!!!!!!!

7. And 40 years of nuclear weapons testing
had absolutely no effect on the DNA of people living in Nevada.
