3 GIs Killed by Roadside Bomb in Baghdad

By The Associated Press 16 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb northwest of Baghdad, the U.S. command said. That brought the number of American troops killed in the Iraqi capital area over the weekend to eight.

The latest deaths occurred about 11:30 a.m., the command, without giving further details.

Five Americans soldiers died Saturday in bombings in the southern area of the capital.

All eight were assigned to the Army's Multinational Brigade-Baghdad which is responsible for security in Baghdad and surrounding areas.......

3. Put three more on the pile

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

7. Should top 2400 active duty killed by end of month
Death rate is up substantially this month. Currently the US troops killed number 2389. So much for "political success in Iraq."

20. See my other post.
The ups and downs are the result of our reacting to new insurgent tactics and their reacting to our counter measures. The fact that the insurgency, now in its third year, continues to survive, learn, and adapt, indicates that we have essentially lost this war. Absent a region wide application of the level of atrocity we visited on Fallujah, its over.

Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 09:31 AM by seemslikeadream

Army dreamers.
Mammy’s hero.
B.f.p.o.
Mammy’s hero.

Our little army boy
Is coming home from b.f.p.o.
I’ve a bunch of purple flowers
To decorate a mammy’s hero.

Mourning in the aerodrome,
The weather warmer, he is colder.
Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier.

What could he do?
Should have been a rock star.
But he didn’t have the money for a guitar.
What could he do?
Should have been a politician.
But he never had a proper education.
What could he do?
Should have been a father.
But he never even made it to his twenties.
What a waste --
Army dreamers.
Ooh, what a waste of
Army dreamers.

Tears o’er a tin box.
Oh, jesus christ, he wasn’t to know,
Like a chicken with a fox,
He couldn’t win the war with ego.

Give the kid the pick of pips,
And give him all your stripes and ribbons.
Now he’s sitting in his hole,
He might as well have buttons and bows.

Ooh, what a waste of all that
Army dreamers,
Army dreamers,
Army dreamers, oh...

(b.f.p.o.)
Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
Army dreamers.
Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
Army dreamers.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
No harm heroes.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
Army dreamers.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
No harm heroes.

the ONLY way to get the attention of the power elite is to take to the streets. As it is now, since we see nothing on TV and nothing in the streets, then nothing is wrong............., as far as they are concerned.

18. Seems like the insurgency has figured out anti-IED tactics.
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 10:39 AM by Warren Stupidity
The news is of course horrible. Can we bring our troops home alive now?

On the other hand there is something fascinating about the IED battle. If you pay attention you will notice that the IED casulty rate has peaks and valleys. The rate goes up for a while, then we deploy new counter measures or revise our patrol tactics and the rate goes down. The insurgents figure out how to circumvent our tactics and technology and the rate goes back up. Some of the stuff we are doing appears to be quite high tech - signal jamming for example. What is happening with IEDs is a metaphor for the whole problem of asymmetric warfare conflicts, the current euphemism for 'how to occupy a hostile nation without winding up in an evacuation of Saigon end game nightmare'. What technology can't do, it seems, is overcome the basic reality that the insurgents live there and aren't going to go away, while the occupying force does not live there and will sooner or later grow weary of the endless violence and go away.

To all of the lingering 'Pottery Barn' rationalizers: how many new dishes are we going to break, for how many more years, before we realize that it is our presence in the pottery barn that is breaking the dishes to begin with?

... now I think they just took a while to realize the US wasn't leaving. From what I can tell, the learning curve of the insurgents is really steep.

41. What Iraqi army?
Read between the lines of the bullshit parade that passes for news. The 'Iraqi Army' is in reality composed in large part of sectarian militia who have loyalties elsewhere and are using the Iraqi Army as a source of material supplies and intelligence. The 'Iraqi Army' is not trusted to go on missions without a superior force of US Army handlers. Think about that.

In Baghdad last week or perhaps the week before shiite units of the 'Iraqi Army' got loose of their handlers and went out on a militia mission and ended up in a seven hour gun battle as they took on a sunni neighborhood. Kurdish militia units hardly even bother with going through the motions of pretending to be 'Iraqi Army'. They know what the score is. Their militia units have maintained their organizational identitity throughout this phase of the bloody farce.

In some fictional occupation we are taking Iraqis from all factions, isolating them from their former lives, and training them into cohesive national units. In reality we are just arming and training sectarian militia units in advance of the inevitable breakup of the former state of Iraq.

19. AP; 3 U.S. Soldiers, 23 Iraqis Killed in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb northwest of the capital, raising to eight the number of Americans killed this weekend in Baghdad area.

More than 20 Iraqis also died in other violence Sunday, including seven who were killed in three explosions that occurred just outside the heavily guarded Green Zone in Baghdad, not far from Iraq's Defense Ministry.

The violence occurred one day after Iraq's parliament met inside the Green Zone to elect top government officials in a breakthrough in a long political standoff.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad repeated his call Sunday for the quick creation of a Cabinet comprising "competent" ministers "who will work for all Iraqis and bring Iraqis together."

Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 10:47 AM by tabasco
other than corporate profits.

While these soldiers were getting killed The Decider was "living life to it's fullest" riding his mountain bike.

"The president spent Saturday morning with a small pack of riders about 90 minutes north of San Francisco. "I still ride the mountain bike -- primarily to help settle the soul and to burn off the excess energy one gets when you're living life to its fullest," Bush told a reporter on the 65-minute ride."

RIP, soldiers.

too fucking incredible.

He's LAUGHING at the cannon fodder and the relatives of the cannon fodder.

I thought his "I have to move on with my life" was his best line ever and would never be topped, but George Bush just did it!

I should have reminded myself that this was a guy who was GUNG-HO for the Vietnam Conflict and yet found the personal courage to decline volunteering for foreign duty.

I, for one, have really misunderestimated him.

26. Not only did he decline to volunteer for foreign duty ...
but he used family connections to jump ahead of hundreds of people on a waiting list to get into the champagne Guard unit.

Lots of guys wanted to get into the National Guard back then because the Guard was not being deployed to Vietnam. The waiting lists for available Guard slots was miles long. Amazingly, GW Bush moved to the front of the line. I guess it was his obvious potential for being an outstanding pilot. Haha. Such great potential that he did not satisfactorily complete his tour of duty and was grounded for further flight training because he failed to take a flight physical.

Now this coward sends men to die for no good reason.

I can't put into words how much I hate him.

25. Don't forget 4 Canadians killed
in Afghanistan this weekend.

http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Canada/2006/04/23/1546546-sun.html
Sun, April 23, 2006

An Edmonton soldier seriously wounded in a suicide attack in Afghanistan in January says he wasn't surprised when he learned four Canadian troops were killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan yesterday.

"Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing we expect to happen during this war," said Master Cpl. Paul Franklin, who had both legs amputated after surviving an attack near Kandahar.

"These men paid the ultimate price, and quite possibly saved the lives of many others (by bearing the full brunt of the explosion). We all take that risk, and we all grieve for their families," said Franklin.

Lieut. William Turner of Toronto, Bombardier Myles Mansell of Victoria, Cpl. Randy Payne of Wainright and Cpl. Matthew Dinning of Richmond Hill, Ont., were killed yesterday when their light-armoured G-Wagon stuck an improvised roadside bomb 75 km north of Kandahar.
