Dean: Voters Will Remember Katrina
NEW ORLEANS -- Standing beside rusted-out cars and soggy mounds of debris, Democratic chairman Howard Dean criticized the Bush administration's post-hurricane recovery effort and predicted voters would remember its "incredible failure."

"This is a searing, burning issue," Dean said. "I think it's going to cost George Bush his legacy and it's going to cost the Republicans the House and maybe the Senate, and maybe very well the presidency in the next election."
....
Dean portrayed Democrats as the ones who value community and take care of all Americans, attributes that he said Republicans don't have.

"They are the party of selfishness and self-absorption," Dean told the party's executive committee in a morning meeting.
....
Standing beside two mangled cars in Copper's side lawn, Dean said: "I hate to be partisan at a time like this" _ and then began his criticism of the GOP.

"This is why the Republicans are going to be out of business," the Democratic party chief said evenly. "Months after the hurricane, it still looks like this. This is ridiculous."

Dean acknowledged that rebuilding takes time, but he said that if President Clinton were still in the White House, "the neighborhood would be cleaned up."

1. God bless Dr. Dean!
He's absolutely right -- it is a national DISGRACE that more hasn't been done to get the Gulf Coast back on its feet. And, contrary to what the pundits all say, I think he's also right about voters REMEMBERING those images and holding this cabal (and its party) accountable come November.

3. Interesting pic that goes with it - it isn't about Dean or the DNC but
the NO mayors election.

9. When the DNC planned their meet, the election hadn't been scheduled
That happened later.

I think everything the Dems are doing in NO this week goes way beyond that election.

4. Katrina was the final
f*ck-up. Tabling every other week puts you out there and you hear everything, from all over the political spectrum. The first FU was Schiavo; boy, did people react 2 that & it was anger at the government butting in where they didn't belong. Katrina, at least here in CA, reminded people that there would B NO safety net, no reserve units, no assistance coming the next time 'the big one' shakes us out of our beds. It opened eyes out here behind the orange curtin.

13. Terri, Cindy, and Katrina--OUR trifecta.
Terri exposed the Jesus freak show that is running the GOP. Cindy pulled questioning the Bush monarchy into the mainstream. And Katrina proved that debt-ridden governments small enough to drown in bathtubs just don't work. Thanks, ladies.

5. I am Glad made the statement about Clinton...
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 07:36 PM by MadMaddie
This statement is important... People are not running away from the Clinton name anymore and the great Clinton Legacy....he is a man of action...no one can deny that...

<snip>
Dean acknowledged that rebuilding takes time, but he said that if President Clinton were still in the White House, "the neighborhood would be cleaned up."
<snip>

In fact if Clinton had been in Charge the loss of life would have been far less than it is....

Heres to Dean

7. "I hate to be partisan at a time like this"
Umm, Dr. Dean, in any other disaster, I might agree. But these people died and/or had their lives ruined for no other reason than the fact that, one way or another, they didn't vote Republican.

And if anyone doesn't believe me, I remember seeing a map on DU around the time Katrina happened, showing how the counties voted in 04, and the poster pointed out that the blue counties (which were of course, hit hardest) were deliberately left out when Bushco declared a state of emergency

14. The non-response to Katrina
was really ETHNIC CLEANSING. So was the $250 million cut in levee repair that Bush made in the years just before Katrina.

It's kinder, gentler FASCISM.

15. ChiTrib: "DNC's Dean talks tough in Big Easy"
By Jeff Zeleny, Tribune national correspondent. Associated Press side bar
Published April 22, 2006

NEW ORLEANS -- Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, stood amid the soggy ruins of a devastated neighborhood here Friday and declared that Republicans would pay the price in the midterm elections for the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina.

"This is a searing, burning issue, and I think it's going to cost George Bush his legacy, and it's going to cost the Republicans the House and the Senate and maybe very well the presidency in the next election," Dean said. "People will never forget this."

Eight months after Katrina struck, top Democratic leaders from across the nation traveled to New Orleans for the party's annual spring meeting. The locale, specifically chosen to highlight the wreckage that remains across this battered city, was selected by Democrats to provide a symbolic image for the fall campaign.

"I'm surprised that the place still looks this way," said Dean, resting his foot near two rusted-out cars in a vacant neighborhood. "I hate to be partisan at a time like this, but this is why the Republicans are going to be out of business. Nine months after the hurricane to have this? This is ridiculous."

17. This should be our rallying call
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 04:26 PM by ast_liberal2008
Many people are very emotional about this issue.
I liked when Dean said Bush "cut and run". We can use their own words against them
