Washington -- The Organization of American States (OAS) has strongly praised the manner in which Peru conducted its April 9 general elections.
In an April 10 statement, the OAS Electoral Observation Mission for Peru said the general elections were conducted "effectively and with integrity." Peru's election process "merits a strongly positive evaluation," the OAS said.
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters April 10 that the Peruvian elections were conducted in an atmosphere that was "free from violence and that they have been free and fair."
McCormack said reports from Peru indicated that the Andean nation was likely to have a runoff election for president in about a month. Peruvian authorities, he said, were still counting ballots following the April 9 vote.
