Harris' chief strategist urged her to abandon Senate race

ORLANDO, Fla. - Rep. Katherine Harris' chief political strategist said Thursday that he suggested she abandon her bid for the Senate because it would be a "tough row to hoe" given the numerous setbacks the campaign had suffered.

But Harris refused. Instead, the Republican decided to spend $10 million of her own money on the race and took her case directly to voters, using Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes" talk show Wednesday night as her platform.

Harris' chief strategist, Ed Rollins, gave a sober assessment of her chances a day after her television appearance, revealing that he and other key advisers concluded it probably would be best if she abandoned the race against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

Rollins said they worried about Harris' sluggish fundraising, her inability to generate excitement among top Republicans, and future fallout from illegal campaign contributions she took from a defense contractor who has since pleaded guilty to bribing a California lawmaker.

4. Somebody in an earlier thread said she inherited
half a billion. That ten million is chump change to her.

Let's hope the combination of colossal ego and unmatched hubris cause her to lose a large chunk of that.

20. Here's some bits on her wealth-
Harris was worth about $7-million in 2001, according to state financial records. Three years later, Harris was worth $10-million to $39-million, according to her federal financial disclosure reports, which allow her to report ranges rather than specific figures.

The increase came after her grandfather died in 1990. Harris sold her family stock, worth between $5-million and $25-million, after a five-year battle among Griffin's heirs, including Harris' mother, Harriet, after his death. The five children divided the multimillion dollar estate.

These figures do not include money she inherited when her father, George Harris, died in January. His assets were reported to be more than $750-million.

Katherine Harris’ Net Worth

SARASOTA — U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris cashed in between $5.1 million and $25.25 million worth of BHG Inc. stock last year, according to her most recent financial disclosure report.

Disclosures were due in May, but Harris, a Republican who is gunning for Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson’s seat, asked for an extension. Her nine-page report, submitted in August, revealed Harris is the second-wealthiest member of the Florida delegation, with an estimated net worth of between $10 million and $39 million <“Congressional Holdings," September, FloridaTrend.com>. Her biggest holdings include a $5-million to $25-million stake in Intercon Marketing, her husband’s marine products firm; a $1-million to $5-million account in Northern Trust Bank; and a rental property in Sarasota valued at between $1 million and $5 million.

The couple’s home on Longboat Key, valued at about $2.28 million, was not included on the disclosure form. She also has $250,000 to $600,000 worth of stock in her father’s business, Citrus & Chemical Bancorporation Inc.

Harris spends about three to four days a week in Tallassee, where the couple has a home, and flies home every weekend to Sarasota, where they have a home valued at $1.4 million on a canal on Longboat Key. They also have a home in Halmstad, Sweden, and travel extensively. (The daughter many Harris biographies mention is Ebbeson's teen-age daughter from his previous marriage and does not live with them full-time.)

Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 01:23 PM by superconnected
oh yeah, through death.

It's a wonder, that after all she did to throw florida to bush in 2000, that the republican party isn't supporting her more, financially etc. You'd think even bushco would just give her the money after all she's done and all he's stole. But nope. No honor among thieves.

Brings it back to the same old truth about them - they eat their own.

17. Don't worry, she'll stick the taxpayers with the tab somehow..........
that's what Republicans are good at. She'll find some loophole, or create one so that she won't lose a penny. Plus, Jebbie will come to her aid and perhaps "W" as well. If it wasn't for her, "W" would never have become president and for that, I and millions of others will never forgive her.

She can spend it on a Senate race of on plactic surgery. Who the fuck cares? She's a loser no matter what she does and a rich Repug losing their money on some frivolous pursuit is poetic justice to me.

19. This EVIL POS gave us BUSH,,,she gatta go cause the Boys at the top
said so...she is a liability now... as Bush is at 33 and going closer to the 20's...she is a danger to the Party...her presence will be a reminder she was most influential during the 2000 Fla election...TOO MANY believe She helped steal the election for Bush. The evidence is small..but if we recall, Bush did not act like he was a gentleman...he was acting like a spoiled kid who had all the candy.

Harris will not be allowed to embarrass

24. Her appearance on Hannity & Colmes...
...was SUCH an embarrassment. She is a singularly unappealing person. When she would look directly into the camera and try to appeal to the audience tv preacher style, it was nauseating. And the crocodile tears about her father's passing were crass beyond belief. Normally I would never call into question someone's grief about the departure of a loved one, but she was just so transparently phony in every way, shape, and form.

31. would Harris winning through diebold finally PROVE election tampering?
if they don't want here to run,it's probably because the only way for her to win is to tamper with the results.
it would be so OBVIOUS that it would shine the light on all the other crooked results they've gotten.
i find it hard to believe Saxby Chambliss won over Max Cleland honestly.

'Flake factor' plagues Harris Senate campaign
By CARL HIAASEN

To refloat her foundering Senate campaign, Rep. Katherine Harris says she's investing $10 million of her own dough.
The donation would be legal, unbundled and untainted -- a bold experiment for the Longboat Key Republican.

Until recently, Harris wasn't particularly picky about where she got her money, or how suspicious it looked. One major booster recently pleaded guilty to paying more than $1 million in bribes to another GOP congressman, Randy ''Duke'' Cunningham of California.

Defense contractor Mitchell Wade admitted buying off Cunningham, and also funneling thousands of dollars illegally to Harris. Harris says she didn't have a clue that the donations were dirty.
Meaning she's either a dunce, or she's lying.

In March 2004, Wade personally pressed into Harris' hot little hand 16 campaign checks for $2,000 each. The checks were signed by employees of Wade's company, MZM Inc., and their spouses. All were illegally reimbursed by Wade.

35. Harris puts her faith `on the line'

SENATE RACE
Harris puts her faith `on the line'
U.S. Senate candidate Katherine Harris aimed to inspire
Christian activists gathered Saturday at Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale.

BY BETH REINHARD
[email protected]

In her first major campaign swing since announcing that she would put $10 million into her U.S. Senate race, Katherine Harris got a morale boost from South Florida voters and preached the gospel to hundreds of evangelical Christians.

The Republican congresswoman addressed the Reclaiming America For Christ conference in Fort Lauderdale, where speakers railed against homosexuality, abortion and the American Civil Liberties Union. The title of Harris' speech was ``Bringing Faith to the Public Forum.''

''I can't imagine public service without faith,'' said Harris, amid stained glass windows and American flags. ``I don't know how anyone could serve, absent that enormous strength.''
(snip)

Her declarations of faith were met with a standing ovation in the church, but might make some more moderate, less religious voters squirm. She said she was raised in a ''godly family,'' and talked about studying at L'Abri fellowship in Switzerland with evangelical Francis Schaeffer.
''I came to realize that my faith wasn't a portion of my life,'' Harris said. ``It was the main ingredient that should motivate every single word and act.''

38. The Bushes probably really buttered her up to get her to help throw
the 2000 election, and she probably took them seriously. Then there was the matter of the first standing ovation she got, in the joint meeting of the Florida legislature immediately afterward, and the armload of roses from a greatful Republican crowd there.

From what I read, she continued to get standing ovations from other groups of Republicans for quite a while. Maybe she has seen enough Republican Senators to learn you don't have to be particularly bright to be a successful Republican politician!

I hope she loses by a landslide, but who knows, with Diebold in play in Florida!
