Protest up the coast

Marchers take their demonstration through Costa Mesa; Newport Beach councilman goes to the White House.

Anti-war activists passed through Costa Mesa on Wednesday, beginning the Southern California leg of their peace march from Tijuana to San Francisco.

Fernando Suarez del Solar, whose son was killed in Iraq, started the effort, local march coordinator Sandy Restrepo said. Marchers left Sunday from Tijuana and have worked their way northward. Though the main goal is opposing the Iraq war, Costa Mesa was chosen as Wednesday's departure point to put immigration issues into the discussion, Restrepo said.
