Women to own half of stock by 2010
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=7d37abdf8aee1f77

By 2010, women will own more than 50 percent of stock in the United States.

Also by 2010, U.S. women will represent 50 percent of the private wealth in America, or about $14 trillion, M2W -- The Marketing to Women Conference -- reported. By 2020, that number is expected to rise to $22 trillion.

Women are already the majority users of the Internet and have surpassed men as the primary consumers of computers, cameras and PDAs, M2W reported.

2. And in 1999, it was said that tech jobs in the US would rise considerably
Polls are rubbish. Controlled and qualified.

They're as worthy as People Magazine.

3. Not exactly girls

The wealthiest people I work with are elderly widows.

Makes sense as they have the combined wealth of two people. I'm sure it's the same for widowers, but there aren't nearly as many of them.

7. but would that really be the *only* reason that we might finally
find parity per income via investments?

Not that we have been in the workforce now for several generations, that some glass ceilings have been broken, and that there is more income earned to go into investments?

12. In my case, my company allowed the Fed maximum $ amount to be
contributed to a 401K while hubby's was maxed as a percentage of pay (12% or 15%). My income was designated to be "socked" away and for discretionary spending while his was used to pay the bills for living expenses. (Besides, I made more)

Ahhh, for the good old days when I was employed.

13. Good for you!
And thankyou for giving an example of how the assumption that the only explanation would be widows with "combined" incomes.

:hi:

16. Another reason for the narrowing gap in income parity...
...is that 56% of undergrads are female and 44% are male, and the gap is growing every year. More men than women drop out of college once they're in, too.

Peace.

5. interesting
half of the population - and the only way parity per investments (at least per in the market as the story is about) would only be due to widowhood? Only due to "inheriting" and thus combining investments with husbands?

Nothing to do with several generations of working women who have the money to invest?

Interesting.

6. I'm almost positive that back in the sixties or seventies,
that women owned more than half the wealth then.

Did we go backwards for a while?

10. market vs overall investments or earnings?
perhaps what is being measured is different? The assumption somewhere on the thread that the explanation is widowhood/combined wealth as the only where there could be parity to be interesting. Perhaps a comment that women do not earn as much or that women's incomes are pushed more towards living expenses and thus less towards investments?

9. Time to make the market crash, then
since we simply can't have both education and wealth overwhelmingly in the hands of mere women.

For those who need help, :sarcasm:

Seriously, the powers that be would rather be poor than confront a bunch of scary rich women who know how to manage money.

11. Heh-heh! What about "a woman's intuition"? If it kicks in for all of
them on the same day - look out!

This could throw those DOW Theory charting folks for quite a loop.

Could this explain the rise in "Socially Responsible" funds? (Not meant to be a dig on men)

14. The mutual funds own about 60-70% of the better stocks. I'm suprised
to hear women are majority users of internet since 75% of the people on the internet at any one time are into porn. Plus, they were trying so hard to get girls and women interested just a few years ago. Something is wierd about that poll.

We have to start worrying about our boys. :sarcasm: I hope women start using their wealth to support better politicians.

I'm surprised about the internet usage. I would like to see this confirmed by another source.
