BERLIN - The German government faced a new call Wednesday for an investigation into whether Berlin secretly supported the U.S.-led war in Iraq as it presented a report on the activities of German agents in Iraq.

Opposition lawmakers have called for a parliamentary inquiry into the spies' deployment in Baghdad after media reports said they helped U.S. forces identify bombing targets.

German officials have denied the reports repeatedly. But they have provided detailed information only to a secretive parliamentary panel that oversees the intelligence services.

Wolfgang Neskovic complained that because the body was sworn to secrecy it couldn't take any public stance on the agents' actions. The panel is also too dependent on the government for its information, he said.

"A ploy is going on here," Neskovic said, calling anew for a parliamentary investigation.

(AP) The German government faced a new call Wednesday for an investigation into whether Berlin secretly supported the U.S.-led war in Iraq as it presented a report on the activities of German agents in Iraq.

Lawmakers are also pressing the government for more information on how a German citizen was allegedly kidnapped in Macedonia in 2003 and taken to Afghanistan by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

The government is also under pressure to provide information on whether the CIA secretly moved prisoners through U.S. military bases in Germany.

The CIA has been accused of running secret prisons for al-Qaida suspects in Eastern Europe and using clandestine flights to ship prisoners through European airports.
