Bush says ready to use veto if Congress overspends

Thu Jan 26, 2006 11:17 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, who has never vetoed legislation, said on Thursday he was ready to do so this year if the U.S. Congress approves too much government spending.

"I'm fully prepared to use the veto if they overspend," Bush told a news conference.

Speaking as it was announced that the U.S. budget deficit would hit $337 billion this year, Bush also said he would welcome legislation to discourage the use of "earmarks," or targeted spending that lawmakers often use for pet projects in their districts. Such measures are often added in secret to spending bills.

Bush touted a five-year bill to cut spending on social welfare and other programs by $39.7 billion. The measure was approved by the U.S. Senate but still needs final passage in the House of Representatives.

Approval by the House of that bill would show a resolve for fiscal discipline, Bush said.

6. he hasn't
but he has done that trick where he signs something and adds to it (next to his name) the statement that says he reserves the right to ignore it.

Note how he wants to cut social spending. Translation: cut school, environmental, health and spending on the poor/middle class, while my cronies get their tax breaks!

8. Maybe by "...I'm fully prepared..." he means that he knows where they...
...keep the box of Commemorative Veto Pens and where the little VETO desk is?
You know they've probably had a Veto Practice session already.

5. THAT headline made me spit my coffee!
He wouldn't know how to veto a spending bill if Dick Cheney's life depended on it.

9. Re Bush & Congress spending: Pot, meet kettle
Bush is the most spend happy President we've ever had. He'd borrow quatrillions to hand it over to his corporate cronies. The only dollar he doesn't like to spend are those that help Americans. He'd rather let the poor die in the streets and the middle class die from a lack of medical care. In the Bush mind, that means 'more $$$ for me!'

20. This Story Is BS.
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 05:18 PM by jayfish
He only said that after he was cajoled on the subject. The real impetus of his answer was that he didn't need to use the veto because every budget from congress has been perfect. Instead of reporting that, they make it sound like * is ready to get down and dirty with the veto pen thereby mollifying anxious members of the Right. Total BS.
