Prison terms handed down in Wendy's chili finger case

New, 4:30 p.m. Woman who said she bit into finger gets nine years; her husband gets more than 12 years for his role.
By The Associated Press

SAN JOSE - A Nevada couple who planted a severed finger in a bowl of Wendy's chili to extort money from the fast food chain were sentenced today to prison terms of at least nine years.

Anna Ayala, 40, who said she bit into the finger, was sentenced to nine years. Her husband, Jaime Plascencia, 44, who obtained the finger from a co-worker who lost it in a workplace accident, was sentenced to more than 12 years.

The two pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to file a false insurance claim and attempted grand theft with damages exceeding $2.5 million for the finger fraud, and unrelated additional charges.

1. Nine years?
I realize the stunt was shady, but it's fucked up that you can get a longer prison sentence for extortion via severed finger than you do for rape or corporate theft of millions.

5. Can you imagine the police resources that were wasted on this?

They were trying to figure out if there were a corpse to go with that finger!

A stunt like this screws with the criminal justice system in the worst way.

6. Not sure it's worth a "niner"
but it gives new meaning to the phrase "She gave 'em the finger"....
sorry couldn't help myself.

3. They had better sentencing odds if the
just repeatedly raped a child....at least in Vermont.

This sentence is a prime example of the poor criminal vs the outrageous, rich and greedy criminal sentencing differences.

4. Chili Finger . . .
. . . sounds like the name of a band.

Which means it's time for this cat to take a nap.

Later, Gators.

7. Little excessive huh?
Once again, money is always valued over life. I could see 3 years for him and 2 for her at the max. And even that would be a stretch.
