Alito assures Specter on abortion views

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, who expressed strong opposition to abortion rights two decades ago, pledged Friday that his personal views on the subject "would not be a factor" in his rulings, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said.

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said Alito had told him in a private meeting that "with respect to his personal views on a woman's right to choose ... that is not a matter to be considered in the deliberation on a constitutional issue of a woman's right to choose. The judicial role is entirely different."

Specter, who supports abortion rights, said he was neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with what he had heard earlier in his office, and emphasized that he would question Alito vigorously about the issue at confirmation hearings scheduled to begin Jan. 9.

The sequence of events - the private meeting followed by Specter's news conference - came after days of controversy sparked by 20-year-old documents in which Alito expressed his opposition to abortion in stark terms.

3. Don't believe a word Alito is saying....
to respond to the first memo as a door opener for getting a job - you better believe that he's doing more of the same. I have rarely heard someone as Anti-Choice as he appears to suddenly have a change of heart and become a pillar to uphold the previous SCOTUS rulings.

4. Yeah, yeah, yeah
Go ahead, Democrats, turn over my country, bound hand and foot, to this Neandrethal. Extend another olive branch, like you did with Scalia and Thomas.

Don't worry, he'll respect precedent, as he overturns 80 years worth of them.

5. I don't believe him.
He's probably just lying so he doesn't get the boot.
Then after he is in he will wreak his havoc.

I mean seriously, should anyone trust this guy?:

6. I trust Alito about as far as I can throw the Washington Monument
His sole concern throughout his career as near as I can tell is to maintain the exalted position of wealthy white men.

7. Gee, Sam! You'll say anything to land a job
I have an idea how to get America involved with the SCOTUS process! They can call Mark Brunette and do an Apprentice style selection all televised for the weekly viewing!!!

GW picks eight or ten candidates divided into two groups, they have to successfully complete tasks, and at the end of each week, the Senate says to one of them..."Thank you for your service. You have been eliminated from the process." (The beauty is that the Senate HAS to say no to a candidate until they get down to the final four. No rubber stamps from party affiliation.) The American people get to vote for the candidate of their choice each week by calling 866-JUSTICE-#.

At final four, WE get to see the interview process with individual Senators! Then, they each have to write an opinion on an issue...each draws their assigned issue from a big ol' top hat! LOL!

The final is a LIVE selection with Senate roll call vote AND the final vote is the America's Favorite with a weight of 51%!

8. I Am More Concerned About the Ethics Issue
This is someone who strategized to erode and remove what was held by SCOTUS to be a constitutionally-protected right of American citizens.

Same thing with the other civil rights' issues. This is someone who time and time again has tried to negate civil - ie, constitutional rights.

This is someone who has worked to weaken the United States' Constitution. He's got no business having a hand in deciding future cases.

9. He pledged not to hear certain cases for his last appointment, then
turned around and did it anyhow, plus argued that he could do it. Once a liar, always a liar - especially in BushCo World

10. Alito will not overturn Roe BUT
he will allow restrictions such that abortion will be only available on Feb. 30 to women aged 55 and older with their husband's written permission...

12. His "Legal Views" are More than Enough to Kill Roe. Delude yourself not.
This is nonsense, nothing but Spector (or Lieberman or the other so called "moderates") trying to rationalize a 'yes' vote on Alito and please conservatives while not alienating pro-choice supporters.
How can his "legal views" be separated from his "personal views." As a Supreme Court justice, his decision on constitutionality of Roe V Wade is a legal decision. What's more, he has no one to review him. He'll only do what is legally appropriate. And we know, his personal view is that Roe was wrongly decided. The reason for the wrong decision was it was not "constitutional". So, when he says in the future that Roe was "unconstitutional", is that a legal conclusion or a personal conclusion? It's obviously both. So he won't follow his personal views. His legal views will do just fine to undo Roe.
Welcome to Idiot America.

14. Are you the same zara from the Rodrigo forum?
Sorry, but this board won't let me use the PM feature, or the search, or the instant messenger buddy list thing... or I would use a more discreet manner of asking you.

But anyway, I used to post a lot on the forum at RodrigoNY.com, before it got closed down. There was a zara there, too, and I didn't think it was a very common username. Are you the same zara?

If so, I've started my own forum and I'd been thinking about how the regulars on the old rodrigo board would be great posters on my new forum, but I have no way of contacting any of them.

If you are not the same zara, please accept my apologies for wasting your time.
