SEOUL (AFP) - A South Korean diplomat stationed in Baghdad was briefly kidnapped by two armed men who warned South Koreans to leave Iraq immediately, foreign ministry officials said.

The incident which occured on Monday near the South Korean embassy in Baghdad came after South Korea decided to accept a controversial US request to send more troops to Iraq.

"A member of the diplomatic staff at our embassy in Baghdad was kidnapped at gunpoint on October 27 by two unidentified men as he was waiting for a taxi in front of the embassy," said Director General Lee Kwang-Jae of the ministry.

"He was released unharmed five minutes later with a warning from the two men that Koreans must leave Iraq immediately," Lee told journalists.
