Illegal Logging Devours Honduran Forests

- US Group
------------------------------------------------------------------------

TEGUCIGALPA - Illegal logging driven by an underground timber trade that stretches from Central America to the United States and Europe is destroying the forests of Honduras, a US -based environmental group said on Thursday.

The Environmental Investigation Agency, a nonprofit watchdog, said demand in the United States and other developed nations fuels an illegal timber trade in the heavily forested Central American nation, abetted by corrupt local officials.

"The people of Honduras can't save the forests if we will in effect receive stolen timber," Allan Thornton, president of the organization, said by telephone from Washington after releasing the report.

"There is massive illegal logging going on and the primary motivation is to export to the US market," he said.

4. The US has a recent history of disrupting attempts to control this illegal
logging. Here's a thread on this from several months back;

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3316529&mesg_id=3319104

This is to one post within that thread, but all throughout the replies are posted addtional important articles. So I recommend working your way through that thread if you are researching background on this subject. Looks like it's time to bring this up again.

One of the things we found that last time - the US media had BLACKED OUT THE STORY of the US disrupting the process of stopping this illegal logging. After all, where there's a profit to be made - and this wood goes into newly built houses and such - the GOP will be there to block all dissent if they can get away with it. Secrecy is easist.
