Iran to help Syria after US sanctions
Iran to help Syria after US sanctions
Tuesday 28 October 2003, 0:29 Makka Time, 21:29 GMT

Iran has promised to come to the aid of its regional ally Syria in the likely event that it is hit by US sanctions.

<snip>
The US accuses Syria of ties to so-called terror groups - namely Palestinian and Lebanese resistance groups - and purported efforts to obtain weapons of mass destruction.

The proposed legislation gives the White House a range of options for sanctioning Syria, from restricting US exports and business investment to downgrading Washington's diplomatic representation and imposing travel restrictions on Syrian diplomats in the United States.

The bill would also ban the exportation of "dual-use"
technology, and allow the US government to freeze Syria's assets in the United States and restrict overflight rights for Syrian aircraft inside US airspace.

Just asking. ...

3. Now that's interesting...
Syria and Iran hadn't really shown much interest for each other before, what with the secular/religious divide, and of course the old Arab/Persian rivalry.

But Bush 'The Uniter' has really brought the region together, hasn't he?

4. Saw a piece elsewhere,
should give credit but I don't remember, about how Saudi Arabia and
Russia had decided to help Syria upgrade it's military equipment and training.
George is a uniter, not a divider.
