The Democratic candidates for state Assembly in the 11th District have criticized their Republican opponents for what the Democrats say is the Republicans' refusal to debate before the local NAACP.
Lorenzo "Bill" Dangler, president of the Greater Long Branch chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said he tried repeatedly to get the campaigns of Assemblymen Steven J. Corodemus and Sean T. Kean, both R-Monmouth, to respond to his request for a debate.
Corodemus and Kean are running against Democrats Jim Reilly and Matthew J. Doherty. The Democrats issued a release suggesting the Republicans are continuing a pattern of insensitivity to the black community. Reilly and Doherty said the Republicans "refused" to debate them.
"I wouldn't say "refused,' " Dangler said. "That's a political game on the other side . . . They did not answer in a timely manner, so we could not put on the debate.
"What disturbed me is we haven't had a debate in our community for more than 10 years. We're just as knowledgeable about issues and have concerns as any other ethnic group," Dangler added.
