COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU

The Democratic candidates for state Assembly in the 11th District have criticized their Republican opponents for what the Democrats say is the Republicans' refusal to debate before the local NAACP.

Lorenzo "Bill" Dangler, president of the Greater Long Branch chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said he tried repeatedly to get the campaigns of Assemblymen Steven J. Corodemus and Sean T. Kean, both R-Monmouth, to respond to his request for a debate.

Corodemus and Kean are running against Democrats Jim Reilly and Matthew J. Doherty. The Democrats issued a release suggesting the Republicans are continuing a pattern of insensitivity to the black community. Reilly and Doherty said the Republicans "refused" to debate them.

"I wouldn't say "refused,' " Dangler said. "That's a political game on the other side . . . They did not answer in a timely manner, so we could not put on the debate.

"What disturbed me is we haven't had a debate in our community for more than 10 years. We're just as knowledgeable about issues and have concerns as any other ethnic group," Dangler added.

1. I guess Ken Mehlman didn't do a very good job of lying to them.
They saw through his scripted pandering.

2. Hey, what's the big deal?
all the naacp has to do is promise to stop pointing out that african americans are discriminated against and promise to stomp out rap/hip hop music and I'm sure the repukes would be MORE than happy to meet with them.

it's just that easy..

3. Neocons like to choose the "leaders" who they deal with. They ignore
the NAACP because they cannot control them. Then they hand-pick "AA leadership" and pander to that group and send money in that direction - aka conservative Afrian American church leaders - hoping that the flock will follow.

Creeps.
