Miers ability to practice law was briefly suspended
Tue Oct 18, 2005 11:01 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers told
the U.S. Senate on Tuesday her ability to practice law in the District
of Columbia was briefly suspended this year because of nonpayment of bar
association dues.

"Earlier this year, I received notice that my dues for the District of
Columbia Bar were delinquent and as a result my ability to practice law
in D.C. had been suspended," Miers said in submitting written responses
to a broad-ranging questionnaire from the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"I immediately sent the dues in to remedy the delinquency," wrote Miers,
President George W. Bush's White House counsel. "The nonpayment was not
intentioned, and I corrected the situation upon receiving the letter."

2. You see? Her diligence in remedying the error makes her SCOTUS material.

21. How do you know?
The nonpayment might have been completely free of intentions.

4. I can't slam her for that. That was some underling's job to watch stuff
like that, and either take care of it, of remind HER to take care of it. I think she's lacking in a lot of areas, but this isn't one of them.

9. Underling's duty --- excuse me?
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 11:48 AM by merh
As an underling -- it's not my license so why am I responsible? Just like their driver's license or their car tag -- it is their's not mine.

What a boss "underlings, you must be responsible for me, I'm too busy to be responsible for myself".

Mind you, when they suspend the license, they don't notify the underling and they don't suspend the underling's license.

:argh:

11. We pay you
That's what you're paid to do, among other things.

If you have another arrangement with your superior, then that's fine. But, if you're one of my support staff, that's one of your duties.

And if I get my license suspended because you didn't take care of it, you're fired.

14. Sorry - that is not part of my duties.
If you get a ticket for driving without a license because you fail to properly get your license renewed, is that also your underling's fault and do you in turn fire the underling?

If so, I am grateful I don't work for you -- it is horrible to work for someone who won't take responsiblity for their own lives.

BTW -- I don't pick up dry cleaning either and I can't attend your CLE courses for you. :hi:

for what they worked so hard to obtain and what they rely on to feed themselves and their employees.

Do your employees also have to get your driver's license renewed and go get your car tag?

How about your malpractice insurance, do they pick out the coverage or do you do that? I realize big whig lawyers like you hire bookkeepers and assistants and the like, but do you ever manage your office?

I'm smart enough to work for folks that do! :hi:

10. That's right
Paying my bar membership dues, as well as other expenses involved in keeping my firm running, are someone else's responsibility - not mine.

I make the money that pays the salaries of those people, so, much as I'd like to read something about the deficiencies of Ms. Miers that would render her unfit to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States, this does not qualify.

7. Absolutely a pattern. The rundown properties and liens..and this.
I'd say that's a pattern of a person whose life is a bit out of control. She should get off the hero-worship and focus on her own life for a while. Hate to see what her checkbook register looks like... betcha it's a jumbled mess. Really someone that inspires confidence and is the best-of-the-best in the land for the Supreme job. NOT.

13. Especially since a supposed attn to detail has been among the faint praise
Before today, my position was that we could do much worse. With the new info on her support for an anti-abortion amend., that's changing :(

26. Did you notice that her net worth
was listed as between 200,000 and 500,000 dollars? That seems a little scant for a big time lawyer of her generation.

(But I can understand why this was posted...I sure hope she is not approved.)

20. Why. Her supporters all claim that she is conscientious and
detail oriented. Even if her "underlings" are supposed to take care of it (which only makes me doubt the capabilities of the people that use this route) she should ensure that they do... after all, that's a "detail."

12. while she was white house coucil?
did she give * advice while she was suspended?

it's kinda strange that she immediately sent in the dues. one would think someone of her stature would pick up a phone to clear up the situation promptly, rather than a "check is in the mail" tactic. but what do i know, i'm no lawyer.

16. Oh, it's not a big deal according to lawyers here.
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 12:13 PM by merh
So what if she was white house counsel, it wasn't her fault, her employees, her underlings, f*cked up and failed to do their job. She has no responsibility whatsoever.

So, remember, if you happen to get a ticket one day because you failed to renew your driver's license, be sure to go into court and tell the city court judge that it wasn't your fault, your spouse failed to pay for the renewal and you have remedied the situation by promptly divorcing the spouse, or maybe you can use, "my secretary/assistant/employee failed to get it renewed and I have fired that person, so I don't really owe that fine."

23. Okay, I've let my dues slide a bunch of times...
...sometimes for as much as three months. I get a bunch of letters, a bunch of warnings and a bunch of reminders, but I've never been suspended. You have to REALLY be a slacker to get suspended.

25. she doesn't care much for the details, does she?
Let's the weeds grow so much that the city has to be called in, the bar has to tell her she can't work if she doesn't pay her fees. I don't like her
