(Ralph) Reed's lobbying work troubles GOP

By JIM GALLOWAY
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 10/10/05

Continued revelations of Ralph Reed's lobbying activities have sparked a high-level debate in Georgia GOP ranks over whether his campaign for lieutenant governor would harm other Republican candidates on next year's ballot, including Gov. Sonny Perdue.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently disclosed Reed's work with Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff in helping to defeat a 2000 congressional effort to restrict Internet gambling.

Reed, who has denounced gambling, already has been tied to Abramoff in several enterprises involving Indian tribes with casinos, now under investigation by two U.S. Senate committees.

In June, documents generated by the U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Committee showed that anti-gambling campaigns Reed helped conduct in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas were financed by Indian tribes with casinos out to protect their businesses. All were clients of Abramoff.

and his usefulness has become an ethical liability.

I'm really enjoying seeing them turn on each other, like crazed weasels.

5. Address the hypocrisy issue? That is hysterical.
"He's got to address the hypocrisy issue before the other side does. How he does that, I'm not sure," he said."

Ralph Reed denies White House, Enron job tie

January 26, 2002 Posted: 1:27 PM EST (1827 GMT)
Ralph Reed

(CNN) -- The White House acknowledged Friday that in 1997, as George W. Bush was deciding whether to run for president, his senior political adviser Karl Rove recommended GOP strategist Ralph Reed for a consulting job with Enron Corp. Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition, went to work for Enron as a strategist, making from $10,000 to $20,000 a month, according to The New York Times.

Ralph Reed joined CNN's Judy Woodruff to talk about the story.

WOODRUFF: Karl Rove (is) telling reporters, telling The New York Times that he did put in a good word for you. Were you aware of that at the time?

REED: No, I was not, and in fact subsequent to being called by the Times and asked about this, I checked back with one of the executives that I met with in September of '97, he says that he never talked to him. He also talked to the other two executives that I met with who made the decision about retaining Century Strategies. They never talked to him. So he may well have talked to someone, but he didn't talk to the people who made the decision regarding hiring my firm.

12. Why can't any of these people ever remember anything?
I remember EVERY person who was ever associated in any way, helping me get a job, and I sure never got one that paid $10-$20,000 a month! My memory goes back 40 years! Why do the ALL say "I checked back with...and I can't find anything that indicates..."!

11. I beg to differ with the title of the article
It's not his lobbying activities that has them concerned; it's the fact that his lobbying shenanigans are being made public. Had his lobbying activities truly concerned anyone in the gop, surely they would have done something to stop them. /snark

19. Amen to that!
This is a time of concern for ignorant and unbelieving Republicans who are isolated from the leadership and think they are seeing isolated and unlucky disclosures. But the leadership of the party knows its showing its slip so bad it's about to trip on it.

It may take years for it to be widely accepted, but sooner or later I think we are going to see the uncovering of a criminal operation, global in scope, self interested to the extreme, and yet so incompetent that it allowed al Qaeda itself to buy its own immunity through participation in the Republican landering operation. We can only pray that incompetence and greed continues to be the signature traits of this operation, so that it can be exposed and punished before the complete the looting of our future.

14. I wonder how much Reed has earned as a consultant?
He made $20,000/month as a consultant to Microsoft. He was hired by Enron (Karl Rove says he is a BIG fan of Reed's and put in a good word for him) in 1997. He worked intermittently, making between $10,000 and $20,000/month until Enron's collapse. He's supposed to have been tied to Bush since 1997 and was picked as the Southeast Coordinator for Bush's reelection campaign.

25. What does he mean by "Christians" ?
I just came back from entering a child into a level-three respite. She is disturbed and has no parents. Her social worker, a devout "Christian" is extremely unhappy about the way the country is being run, as we are spending all our money on the "war". She feels that we are taking away too much money from social programs and as we continue to do this our country is going to end up with huge mental health problems. I like this "Christian" a whole lot better than the "Christians" Ralph is talking about.

I just read a comment he made in 1991. "I want to be invisible. I do guerrilla warfare. I paint my face and travel at night. You don't know it's over until you're in a body bag. You don't know until election night." What a lowlife!

34. I think Ralph Reed and Bill Bennet are Mafia. What do you think they
are talking about when they mention "Family" values. }(
Billy Bennets problem with casino poker machines and all this
business with the Native American casinos...sounds like Buggsy
Reed to me. Why else does he get so uppity yelling "Don't call me Buggsy!"
when you call him that? (sarcasm smily here)
I wonder if I could get a passing grade in bone head investigative reporting 101?
I'm joking but like I'm not joking too. I think repubs are crooks and mafia
with constituents.
