JUDGE IN CHILE SETS PINOCHET’S SECRET FORTUNE AT US$27 MILLION

Amount May Be Greater, Once Further Inquiries Are Responded To

(Oct. 10, 2005) Former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet channeled US$27 million into secret foreign bank accounts over a period of 25 years while he led the nation and its army, said investigating Judge Sergio Muñoz late last week.

Judge Muñoz provided a detailed, eleven page power-point explanation of Pinochet’s suspect wealth and financial dealings to both defense and plaintiffs’ attorneys last Thursday afternoon, the combined effort of his investigation and an investigation carried out by Brilac, a special police unit devoted to money laundering investigations. The investigation confirmed that Pinochet used more than 120 different bank accounts or financial instruments to hide his wealth, and that the US$26,992,712.02 total is an accurate count.

Pinochet’s defense attorneys said that the former dictator’s secret wealth has been widely exaggerated because monies that were moved from one account to another were tallied two or three times by investigating authorities. Following Judge Muñoz’s presentation, they said they would conduct an audit of their own.

The bulk of the money – US$20 million – was deposited in Pinochet’s secret accounts after he stepped down as president in 1990, Muñoz said. He added that the former dictator brought US$5.6 million back into Chile between 1991 and 2004 without making proper declarations to tax authorities.

...

Judge Muñoz is seeking to strip Pinochet of the legal immunity he enjoys as a former head of state so that he may be prosecuted for tax fraud in the Riggs Bank case. Muñoz has also indicted Pinochet family members and a small circle of close associates for tax fraud related crimes. Pinochet’s wife Lucia Hiriart was arrested as an accomplice to tax fraud, as was his youngest son, Marco Antonio (ST, Aug. 12). Both were freed upon payment of bail.

Judge Links Col. Huber’s Death To Pinochet’s Arms Laundering

(Oct. 6, 2005) Investigations into illegal weapons sales to Croatia in the early 1990s and the mysterious death of Col. Gerardo Huber advanced rapidly this week, as new discoveries from the Riggs Bank case shed light on the motives behind decades of arms purchases, bribes, murders and – perhaps – the origin of former dictator Augusto Pinochet’s secret wealth.

New evidence discovered by Judge Claudio Pavez has conclusively linked Huber’s 1992 death to the Riggs Bank case, an inquiry into former Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s private fortune, which is hidden in numerous offshore bank accounts. Pavez, lead investigator for the court reviewing the Huber case, asked for the appointment of a civilian judge to his military panel of investigators on Sept 27.

Col. Huber disappeared on Jan. 29, 1992, two months after United Nations (UN) officials in Hungary seized a Chilean shipment of weapons bound for the Balkan state of Croatia. The country was then under a UN arms embargo for its part in the Balkan War and the weapons shipment was illegal.

As the Chief of Acquisitions for Chile’s army at the time, Huber was expected to appear in court to testify about his role in the illegal arms deal. Shortly before he disappeared he implicated Gen. Carlos Krumm, director of logistics for the army, as a participant in the weapons sale. Huber’s body was found floating in the Maipo River three weeks later.

4. Considering Argentina was poor (and still is)
$27 million might be alot down there. Nice to know we propped up a murdering, plundering, homicidal demon spawn down there, all because he was against communism. Our "Good Neighbor" policy is fantastic.

Meanwhile, this country's government hates Venezulean President Hugo Chavez because he actually gives a shit about people and is working to uplift people out of poverty.

Baneful, murdering dictator vs. hard working man of the people. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

After all, we supported the murdering despots in South Viet Nam during the Viet Nam war. . .we supported Chang Chi-Shek. . .we supported alot of brutal dictators, so long as they were anti-communist.

Hell, we supported the Shah of Iran and Saddam Hussein (for a while). We now support the Saudi royal family!!!

Nice, huh?

5. Well I thought BAE was paying him a lot more than this.
I thought that came out in the news recently. $27 mil is chicken feed compared to the numbers I thought I heard.

I mean hey, DeLay may go down for laundering $190,000. It's just small for Pinochet I thought.

14. The money is only a small part of the bigger picture, the Pinochet regime
was responsible for thousands of deaths--they're still exposing what happened during his nearly two decade reign of terror that the USSA supported even though they carried out acts of terrorism on US soil and the entire planet was outraged at the human rights abuses in Chile.

The 35 torture charges facing Pinochet

The charges faced by the former Chilean leader, General Augusto Pinochet include allegations that his victims were tortured with electric shocks, beatings, sexual abuse and threats of rape. In five of the cases the torture was followed by death.

At Monday's hearing Britain's Crown Prosecution Service, acting for Spain, detailed 34 alleged specific cases of torture and one charge of conspiracy to torture, all dating from December 1988 to December 1989.

CPS barrister Alun Jones said the charges "constitute some of the most serious allegations of crime ever to come before English criminal courts".

16. He's probably had to dip into his stealings, er, savings a lot for legal
fees, etc., etc. since having left "office," and has used a lot up already. It's not easy being a mass, mass murderer/torturer/Nixon collaborator and trying to fend off a nation which is mad as hell about what you've done.

I think it's heavenly that they are going after all five torturer/ghoul/blood feaster offspring, too, as well as the torturer's hag. They've been enjoying the ill-gotten gains long enough.

18. Dozens of investigations for Pinochet...
gotta cost plenty of $$$$$ and then the entire family is being investigated so I guess we can multiply the figure by seven if we include the five kids. May they live long and suffer the way they brought suffering to so many thousands.

Torturer and murderer Manuel Contreras stated that he was surprised that Pinochet had that kind of money, after all, said he, "Pinochet was only a soldier". LOL Chickens coming home to roost. Here'a quote:

"The problem with Pinochet is that he got quite a lot," General Contreras said. Army wages were very low, he said, even for someone as senior as General Pinochet.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/chile/story/0,13755,1570335,00.html

say $2 million. It seems like quite a large amount to me - it was at a time when he wasn't president any more, but commander-in-chief of the army - I'd have thought they'd have to bribe others too. And I don't think it was for huge contracts.

7. JUDGE IN CHILE SETS PINOCHET’S SECRET FORTUNE AT US$27 MILLION
Something to watch for this week is that the Chilean Supreme Court will decide if a lower court decision to strip Pinochet of his legal immunity will stand.

<clips>

(Oct. 10, 2005) Former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet channeled US$27 million into secret foreign bank accounts over a period of 25 years while he led the nation and its army, said investigating Judge Sergio Muñoz late last week.

...Attorneys attending the briefing said it was though they were sitting in a professional seminar about money laundering techniques, and that what most struck their attention was the ballooning of Pinochet’s suspect wealth after he left the presidency in 1990 to become the army’s commander-in-chief.

Muñoz’s charts showed that the former dictator feathered his nest during his 17-year rule of the country with money taken from a special presidential fund (gastos reservados), but that his foreign bank account holdings increased dramatically, by a factor of 10, once he left the presidency in 1990 to resume his position as Army commander-in-chief. This income is apparently the result of arms sale kick-backs received while he remained as commander-in-chief of Chile’s army, a position he held until 1998.

Suspected kick-backs to the former dictator from arms sales have been headline news in Chile in recent months, and have been linked to two long unsolved, high-profile homicide cases: the 1979 murder of six-year-old Rodrigo Anfruns and the 1992 murder of Army Col. Gerardo Huber (ST, Oct. 6).

15. THEY DANCE ALONE

Why are there women here dancing on their own?
Why is there this sadness in their eyes?
Why are the soldiers here
Their faces fixed like stone?
I can't see what it is that they dispise
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
Their anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone They dance alone

It's the only form of protest they're allowed
I've seen their silent faces scream so loud
If they were to speak these words they'd go missing too
Another woman on a torture table what else can they do
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
Their anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone They dance alone

One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
And we'll dance
One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
And we'll dance

Ellas danzan con los desaparecidos
Ellas danzan con los muertos
Ellas danzan con amores invisibles
Ellas danzan con silenciosa angustia
Danzan con sus pardres
Danzan con sus hijos
Danzan con sus esposos
Ellas danzan solas
Danzan solas

Hey Mr. Pinochet
You've sown a bitter crop
It's foreign money that supports you
One day the money's going to stop
No wages for your torturers
No budget for your guns

Can you think of your own mother
Dancin' with her invisible son
They're dancing with the missing
They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
They're anguish is unsaid
They're dancing with their fathers
They're dancing with their sons
They're dancing with their husbands
They dance alone

STING
