Fears that Asian bird flu has spread to Europe as ducks die in Romania

Black Sea villagers and animals under quarantine
· Britain to conduct tests looking for lethal strain

Nicholas Watt in Brussels, Sarah Boseley and Riazat Butt

The Guardian

Fears that the deadly Asian bird flu may have spread to Europe were heightened yesterday when the Romanian government confirmed that three ducks have died of a strain of the disease in the east of the country. Scientists in Britain are to conduct tests on samples to find out whether the domestic ducks were infected by the dangerous H5N1 strain, which has so far been confined to Asia.
The Romanian government warned that it feared that the ducks were infected with the strain, and strong security measures were put in place in the village of Ceamurlia, in eastern Romania, where the birds died late last month. Restrictions were placed on the movement of people and animals into and out of the village near the Black Sea and there were plans to vaccinate people. Nearly all the domestic fowls in the village have been slaughtered.

12. I think it will hit fast and seem to come out of nowhere
Once (if) it assumes person to person transmission.
Especially if it resembles the common cold in its early
stages. Most people get colds all the time and think nothing of it.

16. I think it is being overplayed like crazy to deflect on the Iraq war
however it is a big potential threat. And I would be scared in Holland too as that's not all that far from Romania, Russia, etc. We're a little better off here as migration patterns tend to be north/south

17. Avian flu now in Europe?

Dead ducks in Romania raise fears bird flu is spreading
By James Burleigh
Published: 08 October 2005
Three domestic ducks have died of bird flu in eastern Romania, sparking fears that the Asian virus has hit Europe.

Officials suspect that tests under way in Britain will confirm that the birds were infected with H5N1, the strain of avian flu which experts are tracking for fear it could mutate and spawn a human flu pandemic.

The dead birds were found in the village of Ceamurlia near the Black Sea late last month. Samples were sent to a laboratory in Bucharest, where bird flu antibodies were found. The lab did not have the capability to determine the exact strain of the virus and sent the samples to Britain, where results are expected in the next few days.

Officials have killed nearly all the domestic fowl in Ceamurlia killed and banned hunting in the Danube delta. The movement of people in and out of the village has been restricted and the transport of animals banned. Medical teams were going to administer flu vaccines for residents.
