Miers espoused progressive views as elected official, records show
This will drive the rightwingers into even more of a frenzy about her.

Wonder if 1990 was before or after her being "rebornagain."

By Stephen Henderson

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - In what appear to be some of her only public statements about a constitutional issue, Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers testified in a 1990 voting rights lawsuit that the Dallas City Council had too few black and Hispanic members, and that increasing minority representation should be a goal of any change in the city's political structure.

In the same testimony, Miers, then a member of the council, said she believed that the city should divest its South African financial holdings and work to boost economic development in poor and minority areas. She also said she "wouldn't belong to the Federalist Society" or other "politically charged" groups because they "seem to color your view one way or another."

Miers' thoughts about racial diversity placed her squarely on the progressive side of the 1990 suit, which was pivotal in shifting power in Dallas politics to groups outside the traditional, mostly white establishment.

And some constitutional scholars say that if Miers were to embrace the same views as a justice on the high court, she would fall more in line with the court's pragmatic, moderate wing than with its doctrinaire extremes.

2. Was this before she whigged out and became really far right??
If so, this sort of thing means little to me now....she's so drawn into the Bushco crowd, so devoted, I don't think she has a bit of her former self left..

5. All of this may have been before she was "born again"...
I think she shifted rather radically to the right in the 1990s.

9. The most revealing thing about all of this...
right wing religious fretting and fuming about Harriet is that it is now blatantly and overtly out there...that the plan is now and is for the future and always has been...that the goal is to overcome roe vs Wade....no just assuming it anymore...it is the goal.

10. Stalking Horse? Straw -man? Red Herring?
Pardon my clumsiness- I don't do this but infrequently.

Has anyone thought that Herr Rove has put up Frau Harriet so as to draw off the ire of the Dems and venom of the pukes? That would make the *real* candidate more amenable to the punditry, the zombies, and the general citizenry.

jes' a thought.

11. Yes, but I'm stuck on "why?"

They got Roberts through easily. I do not believe he is the only conservative nominee that would be easily confirmed. At this point, if he nominates a verifiable ultra-right wing freak, it will look very bad - as if he kowtows to the religious right (which we know is true anyway but it's not the "compassionate conservative" yarn that they like to spin) and if it's someone more moderate, he will piss off the freaks. Which leaves him with doing what would have been the easiest thing in the first place - nominate another Roberts. I keep going back and forth on whether I think that this is a put up job or just unabashed cronyism. Currently I'm going with the old reliable "utter incompetence".
