ROME (AP) - Five people went on trial Thursday in the 1982 murder in London of Roberto Calvi, an Italian financier whose close ties to the Vatican earned him the nickname of ``God's banker.''

The initial hearing in the high-security courtroom was procedural, and presiding Judge Mario D'Andria said he hoped for a quick trial, although he cautioned that it has been a long time since Calvi's death.

``Let's all try to keep in mind that this is a trial about facts that have happened almost 24 years ago,'' he said.

Calvi's body was found hanging from scaffolding beneath London's Blackfriars Bridge, his pockets stuffed with stones and cash, and police there initially ruled his death a suicide. That finding was later changed, and Italian prosecutors concluded in 2003 that Calvi was murdered, although defense lawyers maintain he took his own life as the bank he headed collapsed in a fraud scandal.

The Vatican Bank's CEO Cardinal Marcinkus got off scott free because George H Bush, as Reagan's VP and later as president, gave Marcinkus immunity from prosecution, on the grounds that 'God's Banker' Roberto Calvi "clearly committed suicide because he was depressed".

Marcinkus has lived rent-free in Arizona since 1989.

Last week the UK press reported that the Calvi murder trial litigants want to subpoena Marcinkus as part of their defence.

If that is alowed and Marcinkus is compelled to testify in public, then Bush Sr may also be subpoenaed.

MAYBE that's why Ratzinger was elected as Pope earlier this year: to repvent any of such testimony ever reaching the public domain.

'There's no proof against me, and no proof of a link between Calvi and the Mafia,' he added.

ROBERTO CALVI, the Mafia-linked financier known as “God’s banker”, made a desperate last appeal to Pope John Paul II to save him from financial ruin shortly before he was found hanging from scaffolding under Blackfriars Bridge nearly a quarter of a century ago.

The disclosure emerged on the eve of the opening today of the trial in Rome of four people accused of murdering Calvi in June 1982. The first inquest, held a month after his death, ruled that Calvi, 62, had committed suicide. A second inquest, a year later, reached an open verdict.

But Calvi’s relatives — above all, his son, Carlo, a banker in Canada, and his widow, Carla — have maintained that he was murdered by Mafia gangsters to cover up the extent to which the Vatican Bank, which funded anti-communist causes in Eastern Europe and Latin America, was entangled with organised crime.

They also claim that an illegal masonic lodge, P2, to which Calvi belonged, was involved in the conspiracy.

Magistrates investigating the death of the Italian banker Roberto Calvi under Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 are focusing on Licio Gelli, the former "grand master" of the illegal P2 Masonic lodge that plotted against Italian democracy in the 1970s.

Mr Gelli denies he was involved but has acknowledged that the financier, known as "God's banker" because of his links with the Vatican, was murdered. He said the killing was commissioned in Poland.

The Polish Fascist Party was involved in the fraud and theft of UK assets which it laundered via Banco Ambrosiano to bankroll the Solidarity movement in Poland and the campaign to win popularity for Carol Wojtyla, aka as JP2.

Are there any connections in this case to US banks/groups?
Seems likely to be some Money laundering /Swiss bank accounts that the Papal Bank was involved with that connected to Wall Street.

to testify be the defence.

If this gets the OK then Poppy could be made to testify too because he was the one who gave Marcinkus immunity from prosecution on the spurious grounds that Calvi committed suicide, according to the latest available forensic evidence 20 years ago, which has since been thoroughly discredited by UK's City of London cops.

The US banks and financial institutions involved in the managemenet of Vatican investment portfolios will also have to be named in open court because the main cause of Ambrosiano's colapse as well as that of the Vatican Bank was that some $400million+ of their investment portfolio was the proceeds of theft. Subsequent loans and mortgages raised on those assets to pay off unrelated debts were instrumental in the banks' insolvencies.

Examination of the Vatican bankrutcy details for the years 1981 to 1984 is seminal to the whole murder trial.

Of further interest are much later investments made by the Vatican, in the 1990s.

The key question here is: who paid off the Vatican's Enron portfolio losses?

Best bet: the Saudis, via a Papal slush fund called the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St George, run from the UK by o0ne Anthony Bailey.

This order doshed up the Vatican Bank after Marcinkus was booted out and fled to Arizona....

Maybe I'm getting my facts crossed. I recall some mention of this possibility from Wall St. journalist Alan Friedman's great book "The Spiders Web".

Calvi/Marcinkus and BCCI is HSBC's chairman John Bond.

Bond, Calvi and Bank of England supervisory committee executive Brian Quinn were all involved in a UK investigation into theft and moneylaundering circa 1970-74 of a portfolio of assets that Midland Bank (now part of HSBC) was managing for the Marian Fathers, who were involved with the Polish Fascist Party's attempts to get the vatican a seat on the UN Security Council, and who later bankrolled Solidarnosc into office and Carol Woytyla into the Vatican.

Bond was also a close business associate of Edmond Safra RIP, former owner of Republic National Bank of New York. See:
