Protests greet Bush in Australia
US President George W Bush has arrived in Canberra, where he is to deliver a thank-you address to the Australian parliament for sending troops to take part in the war in Iraq.

Thousands of people protested at the central town hall in Sydney ahead of his arrival, calling for Australian soldiers to be withdrawn from Iraq. More demonstrations are also planned in Canberra.

An unprecedented security operation involving hundreds of riot police and anti-terrorist forces is under way for the 20-hour visit which will mark the end of Mr Bush's six nation Asian tour.

One of the top issues on the tour has been regional security.

1. Maybe he's retracing his ancestral roots....
Australia is where the UK used to transport convicted felons who were cluttering up the streets back home in the 18th and 19th centuries...

Ya know, we see alot of this lately. Everywhere the Boy Monkey King goes, hundred of jack-booted riot thugs are necessary to keep the people from swarming... we are witnessing the steep descent into a totalitarian world. Thanks Chimpy. :grr: :argh:

5. and a thankyou BBQ !!
Dubbya's deputy Sheriff PM John Howard is throwing an Aussie barbeque for him at his official residence The Lodge..an informal get together of local politicians and celebrities.. plus 14 helicopters and 3 fighter jets constantly circling, 1000 troops, 2000 policeman and assorted Secret Service.

Dubbya is also visiting the War Memorial in Canberra to lay a wreath..but the entire staff (many Vietnam Vets) have been given the day off..obviously can't be trusted.

Dubbya gives his speech to the Australian Parlaiment tomorrow and each MP has been allowed 2 guests to sit in the Public Gallery to hear him talk. Bob Brown MP, Leader of The Greens has invited the wife & daughter of an Australian citizen incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay.

8. Is he the first president in Australia with protests?
I'm wondering if any other recent presidents have had all these protests and extraordinary measures of protection taken? I wish America would notice how much of the world feels about this man!

15. No, Lyndon Johnson had that honour first.
He was here at the height of Vietnam protests, and there were a
lot of anti-war protesters out to greet him. There was one famous
incident where a group of protesters lay down in the road in front
of his car, and the then Premier of New South Wales, a slimy crook
named Bob Askin, told his driver to "run over the bastards".
