Rice: Disaster shows 'ugly way' race, poverty collide
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the people who were stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina are evidence that race and poverty can still come together "in a very ugly way" in parts of the "Old South."

"The United States should want to do something about that," Rice said in an interview Monday with the editorial board of The New York Times. "There are still places that race and poverty are a huge problem in the United States, and we've got to deal with that."
....
"And I say that absolutely, fundamentally," she said. "You go to any other meeting around the world and show me the kind of diversity that you see in America's Cabinet, in America's foreign service, in America's business community, in America's journalistic community.

"Show me that kind of diversity anyplace else in the world, and I'm prepared to be lectured about race."

51. Not a chance...
No matter how much she kisses her "husband"'s posterior (or other body parts?), there is simply no way that the vast majority of the Republican base is going to vote for someone with a) no Y-chromosome or b) different skin pigmentation. Combine both those traits, and their heads will explode!

Condi has as much chance to get the G.O.P. nomination as Nader has of being the Democratic nominee.

9. Right, Euro-Americans of varied countries of origin: enforced Slavery and
enforced via death marches our Reservation-Concentration Camps, medical experimentation on blacks and prisoners. And now the scant participation by some ethnicities' in Institutional Racism shows up in the corporate boardrooms when conservatives bribe congressional and executive politicians who now gut affirmative action, universal health care access, higher education scholarships, worker wage minimums, financial preferences for the wealthiest and even voter access to democratic insitutions.
Connie is so entrenced in the monied elite of our oligarchy, she can't see her own negligence and deriliction of the sec. of states' missed opportunities to ease the growing gap between rich & poor from the right shifting US government. imo

14. Condoleeza Rice is fucking crazy.
There is far more diversity in other nations, than there is in our own country. Education transcends color and gender in third world nations. Other nations have voted in blacks and women as presidents or leaders of their countries.

Open your eyes, Condi. And cry along with us.

15. That's it! She is totally insane!

I would advise her to look at her TV and check out the % of people that are in positions to "take charge" of anything and she will see RACISM in America.

Just look at any channel and watch who gives the news and the people that are in charge of what ever is happening....

fireman, police- not the NO staff , reporters, Tweety and all his crew, Heads that speak for organizations, the Senate - one real African American the CABINET (NO African Americans or other minorities...just three I believe SLAVES for the MASTER, those three are not representing their race, they are little BUSH SLAVES that are painted to look like the race they pretend to be.

Shut Up Condi, you embarrass all of my Brothers and Sisters that you had when you were a child.

Or as Kanye says.... GEORGE BUSH DON'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE

put her in a pair of polyester stretch pants and a tee shirt...take her ID away..then drop her into the Super Dome a week ago..or the Astro Dome today..

She would have a better "feel" for what lots of people go through daily...at stores, schools, offices, neighborhoods..

18. Bubble woman
Pathetic that an African-American woman should utter this phrase: "There are still places that race and poverty are a huge problem in the United States..." Ivory Tower intellectual that she is, she apparently has no clue that both problems exit everywhere in this nation and are getting worse, not better.

21. Here's why she's clueless:
Condi Rice is a multi-millionaire. At this point, she could very well be a billionaire. She is a former employee of Chevron(?). She had an oil tanker named after her.

She's very well versed in "White Man's politics" and she knows how to play the game. And it's paid off very well for her.

The problem is, millions of dollars have a way of isolating you. She's single, has no kids, but she has LOTS of shoes.

While the South was drowning, she was at Ferragamo's buying thousand-dollar shoes. No one is moved by her speeches, because she is empty inside with nothing but a big bank account.

And she does have shoes.

47. I read something on a blog, can't remember which one
It was a comment issued by a man who purported to be a cousin of Condi's. He said that most of her life as he has known her, she has always been very cold, closed up, virginal, possibly Lesbian (he stated he is gay). So this apparent 'flowering' under George Bush he took as a sign of nothing short of major emotional infatuation.

Sorry that's rather vague; I didn't save the link, and in any case I have no way of knowing if this guy was indeed who he said he was. But I do think his statement is supported somewhat by the way she seems to be around George and Laura so very very much. I mean, didn't she have Xmas dinner with them last year? And compare that dominatrix look with her earlier buttoned-up look from when she first came on as Nat'l Security Advisor. I find the whole thing creepy; I'm betting Georgie just loves it.

25. IOW: "Race may be a problem, but it's not our fault."
I had hoped she would stop herself at the insulting
reference to all the high profile black faces in America.
Unfortunately, Condi goes full jingo in the article.
America has the best race relations in the world, she says.

:puke: :puke:

When 100,000 poor, mostly black Americans were in danger,
the Bushies could not even interrupt their vacations.
What country can she compare this to favorably?

45. At least someone in the administration is seeing the racial/poverty factor
How can she really deny it, having grown up black in the south.

She also knew one of the little girls in the Alabama church bombing in the early 60s, the one Spike Lee made the documentary about. Whatever my criticisms of her may be about policy, I have never experienced racism the way she has.

"There are still places that race and poverty are a huge problem in the United States, and we've got to deal with that."

Personally I don't think race is a problem. I think poverty is. But yes when Race and poverty collide it's a problem.

Other than helping Bushco make the middle class poor and the poor homeless, it's nice of you, MS Rice to give lip service to the poor black people. After all, that is what you were hired for.
