Powell says U.N. speech a 'blot' on record
WASHINGTON - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday his prewar speech to the United Nations accusing Iraq of harboring weapons of mass destruction was a "blot" on his record.

"I'm the one who presented it to the world, and (it) will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It is painful now," Powell said in an interview with Barbara Walters on ABC-News.

The presentation by the soldier-diplomat to the world body in February 2003 lent considerable credibility to President Bush's case against Iraq and for going to war to remove President Saddam Hussein.

In the speech, Powell said he had relied on information he received at Central Intelligence Agency briefings. He said Thursday that then-director George Tenet "believed what he was giving to me was accurate."

(snip)

He said he had never seen a connection between Baghdad and the 9-11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. "I can't think otherwise, because I'd never seen evidence to suggest there was one," he said.

Truth and Consequences
New questions about U.S. intelligence regarding Iraq's weapons of mass terror
By Bruce B. Auster, Mark Mazzetti and Edward T. Pound

On the evening of February 1, two dozen American officials gathered in a spacious conference room at the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Va. The time had come to make the public case for war against Iraq. For six hours that Saturday, the men and women of the Bush administration argued about what Secretary of State Colin Powell should--and should not--say at the United Nations Security Council four days later. Not all the secret intelligence about Saddam Hussein's misdeeds, they found, stood up to close scrutiny. At one point during the rehearsal, Powell tossed several pages in the air. "I'm not reading this," he declared. "This is bulls- - -."

Colin Powell also blames people in the intelligence community for "not speaking up". Duhhhhhhhhhhh. There were people speaking up and being punished for doing so, Mr. Powell.

Colin Powell chose to keep is comfy job and to ignore those that had spoken up.

Colin Powell knowingly presented lies to the United Nations because he was afraid of Bush and Cheney.

Blot? Sorry, much, much more than a blot.

Mr. Powell, your lies to the United Nations will define you forever more in history. Not a blot at all, it will be the hallmark of your career.

This was your chance to have a "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" moment. You could have presented the whole thing as the absolute shameful farce that it was. You could have exposed these scoundrels, on the world stage, for what they were. You could have shut down all the shame and torture and senseless killing before it even started. You could have saved the lives of almost two thousand American soldiers and countless tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians.

You could have been the next President of the United States. You could have been the first African-American President of the United States. You could have been a national hero. That's an opportunity that YOU HAD AND THAT SO FEW GET.

But you BLEW IT. Spectacularly.

Deal.

30. Powell speech 'painful' (said UN speech was 'a blot' on his record)

Powell speech 'painful'
---------------
From correspondents in Washington
09sep05
---------------
FORMER US secretary of state Colin Powell has said his UN speech making the case for the US-led war on Iraq was "a blot" on his record.

In the February 2003 presentation to the UN Security Council, Mr Powell forcefully made the case for war on the regime of Saddam Hussein, offering "proof" that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
The presentation included satellite photos of trucks that Mr Powell identified as mobile bioweapons laboratories.

(snip)

"It's a blot" on my record, Mr Powell said in an interview with America's ABC News to be aired today.

"I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and (it) will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now."

Mr Powell spent five days at the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters ahead of the speech studying intelligence reports, many of which turned out to be false. He said he felt "terrible" at being misinformed.

is even if these weapons were there, they would have been hidden and gotten rid of pretty quick. Why? Because these would have been traced right back to the USA  Way to start the War On Terra! So I guess they prefered the "Oh sh*t we messed up AGAIN, sorry!" line while they, anyways got what they wanted.

61. It's all about Colin, isn't it. He should apologize for making it all ...
about Powell. Why else would he give a bogus speech? Did he think it would be a quick victory and he would be able to tell the big lie without sullying his record? Does he now realize, he can't get away with the lie so he needs to incrementally ease into an apology for his lie?

This guy is deep! hip deep in his own bull shit.

He should have told Bush to fuck off and then quit. THAT WOULD HAVE STOPPED THE WAR, THAT'S HOW MUCH POWER HE COULD HAVE EXERCISED.

If anybody thinks that the war could have survived public opposition by Powell, I'd love to her the analysis (I'm sincere about this because I can't imagine it but would be in awe if you could convince me).

65. That's it?
a blot? Poor Colin, don't tell him about dead soldiers because he's suffering too!

A blot that has killed almost 2000 Americans and 100000 Iraqi's and this is what he does about it? He says "ooops"?

I won't be happy until a parent of a dead GI spits in his face. Probably not even then.

What's worse, to play patsy for an idiot and help sell an unecessary war? Or to realize you've done it and do nothing about it?

With his admission of this "blot" he becomes even more of a pathetic traitor.

A vanity interview to atone for promoting deadly lies.

67. Questions Barbara WaWa should have asked
Colin, my friend:

You say there were people in the intelligence community who knew that the information George Tenent gave you was weak, and that is "devastating" to you. Who are these people who knew that the intelligence was weak? People have said that John Bolton, our UN ambassador, and others from a civilian group run out of the Pentagon and with close connections to the vice-president who himself went to the CIA to "supervise" intelligence-gathering, threatened and abused those who spoke out against the weak intelligence. Do you believe those charges? Why do you think people in the intelligence community remained silent if they knew the information you were presenting was wrong?

Colin, you say that there is no connection between 9/11 and Saddam Hussien. Why did you not speak out on this lack of connection when others in the administration were promoting it? Why are you disputing the claim now?

Colin, Americans learned there were no WMD years after your speech before the UN, after we were already enmeshed in a bloody and costly war. When did you first become aware that the intelligence you presented before the world at the UN was false? When you knew with certainty that you were wrong, what did you do to correct the misrepresentations you had previously promoted before the world?

Colin, if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

71. Hey Colin
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 10:06 AM by Puglover
there is a scene from the original "Airport" where Maureen Stapleton is watching people deplane from a plane her husband just blew up. She's sobbing and repeating "I'm sorry" I'm so sorry. I'm sorry I'm sorry." Do THAT for the rest of your stinking life and maybe I'll believe you feel remorse. A "blot". Evil clueless bastard.

72. Wish there will be a way to indict him, and to throw him in jail
like the rest of them for mass-murdering Americans and foreigners, and for looting the Treasury for the love of oil and war-profiteering as soon as it'd become possible to do so.

75. He's sorry because he got caught, period.
He's a grown man, and he knew full well he was telling a barefaced lie.
It doesn't matter how he tries to spin it and cover it up, it's still
what he intended, it was a lie, and it surprised me at the time that he would have his nose up Bush's butt so far, that he would do something like that to help Bush get on with his damned unprovoked war. He knew how corrupt Bush was and yet he went along with aiding and abetting his scheme. He has no shame, and he should just shut the hell up now.
Colin Powell has absolutely no credibility, zilch, na na, zero.
:nopity: :spank: :spank:
