Bush sends 7,000 US troops for Katrina relief

WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush, acknowledging the initial federal relief effort for Hurricane Katrina was unacceptable, said on Saturday he will send 7,000 additional troops to storm-ravaged region.

"Today I ordered the Department of Defense to deploy additional active-duty forces to the region. Over the next 24 to 72 hours, more than 7,000 additional troops from the 82nd Airborne, from the 1st Calvary, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and the Second Marine Expeditionary Force, will arrive in the affected areas," Bush said.

...

"The main priority is to restore and maintain law and order and assist in recovery and evacuation efforts," Bush said.

8. Combat units?
Shouldn't NG from other states go before they haul out the line units?

9. Yes Combat Units
The 1st and 2nd MEU's are geared for combat operations, not search and rescue, and unless the 82nd and the 1st Cav are sending their
Support Commands, then both of those brigades are also combat units.

I'm not sure what Nero has planned, but sending in combat units is not a good sign.

10. These are not
outfits you send in to play pattycakes.

These are asskickers used for "forced entry" operations.

11. I was in the 10th Mountain Division for Hurricane Andrew.
Before the storm even hit, we had a warning order to be ready to deploy. Right after the storm hit, we were on C-5s headed for Homestead. As soon as the battalion hit the grounds, we were distributing food & water, and clearing roads. That was then - this is now.

Bush has shown that the welfare of the American People is not a priority for him.
