Slain Marines tried to root out insurgents

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The 21 Marines killed in northern Iraq this week were trying to contain "a very lethal and, unfortunately, adaptive enemy" operating in towns along the Euphrates River, a top Pentagon general said Wednesday.

"They are dangerous and they certainly have a capability," said Brig Gen. Carter Ham, deputy director for operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "But whether or not they have an ability to freely operate in that area, I think not."

A Marine amphibious assault vehicle on patrol during combat operations near the Syrian border hit a roadside bomb Wednesday, and 14 Marines were killed in one of the deadliest single attacks in Iraq against American forces.

Ham declined to provide details of Wednesday's attack, saying it was too early in the investigation.

5. The weird thing about Cheney...
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 11:32 AM by The Night Owl
Cheney is portrayed by the Republicans and the media as being a sage and tranquil operator with a lot of experience, but the more the guy talks, the more it becomes apparent that he is an absolute idiot and blowhard.

One has to wonder... Is Cheney drunk or is he really that stupid?

23. you've hit on something here

Cheney has some aura of age-tempered-know-it-all-ism that at first glance looks like he knows something about something. But then the more you listen your realize that he's probably as dumb as his "boss"
there is something evil in this stupidity, though...

29. There was a guy from the Brookings Institute on CNN
this morning saying Cheney's last throes comments were way off the mark, that the insurgents, terrorists are pretty lively. Cheney is as far off as Rummy's comments on deadenders

2. Last throes
I caught Barbara Starr on CNN and they showed a clip from the Pentagon briefing. Guess what?!! They were killed BECAUSE WE ARE WINNING. Since we are now attacking simultaneously in many places, the insurgents do not have anywhere to flee, so they are killing our soldiers. Plain and clear, last throes, don't you know...

7. This is what NBC News was reporting on the 6 deaths yesterday
For U.S. military officials, the deaths of the six Marines Monday raises an unsettling prospect: that they may have been victims of someone with inside information.

The six were members of two sniper teams, trained to pick off the enemy at a distance, one-by-one, with a single precision shot.

Officials report the sniper teams were working together and in position when they were ambushed by insurgents.

Marines nearby heard the short, heavy burst of enemy gunfire that apparently killed five of the Marine snipers instantly. Evidence indicates the attack came so quickly the Marines were unable to return fire.

The sixth Marine either escaped or was taken prisoner but was later found dead a mile or so from the scene of the attack.

Last throes my ass Cheney! I get the feeling with the '06 midterms looming next year that * is about to declare victory and mostly pull out. I feel for those poor troops that will be left in Iraq. * has gotten us in to the ultimate no-win situation. And I find it ironic with how the Repukes smeared Hackett that the 20 Marines are from Ohio. I feel for the families, but too bad they are not from Schmidt's district. Those who voted for her and who voted for * have the blood of these Marines and all the 1800 plus thousands of Iraqis on their Red Hands.

12. Everytime you hear someone say 'last throes' or that we are
winning, you're listening to an asshole who doesn't have family or friends over there. It's easy to be so 'cool' about it when you don't have anything or anyone to lose.

20. But it's like 9/11, you know -- reading the book to children
he is doing his presidential best to calm us down. Otherwise we would all be panicking about Iraq, so he has to do it for our collective well being. He hates Crawford -- but that's his sacrifice for all of us.

18. I'm on pins and needles.
Two of the people I know that are in Iraq are in that same Ohio Battalion that lost all of these men in the past day. I keep refreshing the casualty lists and they won't release the names. I pray for something positive.

Condolences to all families who lost soldiers and citizens.

If ANYthing happens to Jeff or Dave, anyone who supports this war or voted for this administration . . . enemy. For life. There's no excuse for this much loss.

Could someone with broadband try to find for me how many days of vacation FDR took during WWII??

How about Truman and Ike during the Korean War?

How many days did Wilson take off during the "War to End All Wars" (WWI)?

yep, "pretzle-denting is 'hard werk'"!

I only wish I had to "werk" that hard.
