ATLANTA -- President Bush spoke Friday in Atlanta to a crowd of supporters about his proposed changes to Medicare and Social Security. It was his first public appearance in Georgia in more than a year. The president walked off of Air Force One about 10:45 a.m. after the plane touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

A coalition of liberal groups was planning to give the president a sour welcome, with up to 100 people planned at a protest outside the event of Bush's plans on Social Security. "We do not support this," said the Rev. Timothy McDonald, pastor at First Iconium Baptist Church in Atlanta. McDonald joined anti-war groups and a labor group near the Martin Luther King Jr. historic site to announce plans for a morning protest on the street outside Bush's speech at a civic center.

Bush's plan to create private savings accounts as part of an overhaul of Social Security was blasted by the protesters Thursday as they prepared to ship water and supplies in for the main event Friday."They want to permanently weaken Social Security and turn a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble," said Charlie Flemming, president of the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council.

It's unlikely the protesters will outnumber people attending the (Invitation Only) speech. More than 4,000 can fit in the civic center, with free tickets given out by Georgia (Republican) congressmen and a few chambers of commerce.
