(It looks like we are getting a lot of the "Friday News Dump" stories today, if you look for them)

Navy Panel Recommends New Search For Speicher

POSTED: 12:28 pm EDT July 7, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A board of inquiry reviewing the latest search for a Navy pilot missing since his jet was shot down 14 years ago during the first Iraq war recommends that the Pentagon step up its efforts to find him, according to Sen. Bill Nelson.

Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher, a native of Jacksonville who was flying off the USS Saratoga, is classified as missing/captured by the Department of Defense.

After reviewing the report, Nelson recommended to Navy Secretary Gordon England that Speicher's status be retained since the board found no evidence to suggest that he is dead.

The board of inquiry was formed at the direction of Secretary England to review evidence gathered over the past two years by a team that searched for clues to Speicher's fate in Iraq.

1. Hold on...isn't this the same guy that they tried to put forward before?
I thought this had been shown to be a product of the WH propaganda machine?

2. I don't know that much about it, but some of the Vietnam Vets here...
...have told me that he is still considered MIA or POW from the Gulf War (1991).

Since the Pentagon seems to want to sneak this one by us on a "Big News" distraction day, I though I should post it.

5. I knew him
When he went missing, during Gulf One, he was a fresh LCDR. Now, with all the autopromotions you get while you are in POW or MIA status, the kid is an 0-6....I'm sure he'd rather be a civilian in FL, if he lives, which is doubtful at this point, frankly. The story in brief:

He got shot down at the end of that "war" and Dick Cheney, then SECDEF, declared him dead (we can't have a victory parade if there are still POWs out there, can we???). His family had a problem with that classification, especially since his wingman saw a chute.

Later, they found his flight suit in the desert. Bill Clinton resurrected him, declaring him Missing, believed captured, whereabouts unknown.

His wife has since remarried. There are a lot of people who are VERY UNHAPPY at the way Scott was handled. No one went after him. No one kept looking. Why? The SECDEF didn't want to spoil the party. It was wrong as hell. It's not how we do business. I find myself unable to get over it, frankly--it was a craven act by a craven SECDEF. Unforgivable.

Course, what else might one expect from a fucking Chickenhawk?

3. Yeah - now he's in Iran.
They've used that guy's ghost to get into Iraq. Why not run the whole movie again with a slight change of locale?

People are stupid. They'll eat it up with a spoon.
