Attacks scattered around Iraq (Iraqi News Exec Killed)

In other attacks, the military says a suicide car bomb near a coalition base north of the capital killed a U-S soldier and wounded another.

Iraqi police say a car bomb north of Baghdad killed at least five people. South of Baghdad, police say a suicide attacker wearing a bomb belt killed a policeman at a checkpoint.

In Kirkuk, a suicide car bomber rammed a convoy carrying the northern city's traffic police chief, killing a bodyguard and a civilian.

And an Iraqi hospital official says U-S troops killed an Iraqi news executive when he didn't pull over for a U-S convoy.

4. It would be interesting to know more about the news executive
For example, was his news agency generally positive or negative towards the occupation and American imposed government? Given past experience, one expects the latter to be the case.

6. I don't know what happened.
But the U.S. military has been responsible for a considerable number of journalist deaths. That is why it would be useful to know about his agency's general take on things - it would add some context to the story. Recall the shooting of the Italian journalist, or the killings of several Al-Jazeera journalists, or the shooting of Dana Mazen (the killing near the Abu Graihb prison). I am sure there are many other examples that could be given.

16. yuppers
Yup...let's compare this event with Segrena's shooting. There has definitely been a pattern of overt media suppression in Iraq. In fact, that World Council on Iraq (or something like that name) cited the US for that very war crime. And how many journalists have been killed there?

9. Iraq lawmaker, 2 US troops killed as Bush to speak
~snip~

Hours before he was to speak, two U.S. soldiers were killed in separate suicide car bomb attacks on patrols.

~snip~

Bombs have killed more U.S. soldiers in each of the last two months than in any previous month since the war began. One U.S. soldier was killed and one wounded by a suicide car bomber in Balad north of Baghdad. Another soldier was killed and two wounded by a similar attack in nearby Tikrit.

10. U.S. Accused in Iraqi Journalist's Death
BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops allegedly killed an Iraqi television director Tuesday when he drove near a U.S. convoy, colleagues and a hospital official said. The U.S. military said it had no reports of the incident.

Ahmed Wael Bakri, a program director for al-Sharqiya television, was the third Iraqi journalist allegedly killed in similar incidents in the past week.

He was trying to pass a traffic accident and wasn't paying attention to a U.S. convoy when troops allegedly opened fire at his car, according to Riyadh al-Salman, a production director at the station.

Dr. Muhanad Jawad of the Yarmouk Hospital also said Bakri was shot when he failed to pull over as the U.S. convoy passed in the area.

11. Iraqi journalist shot, US forces accused
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/51D004E1-C147-4F5C-817B-967125129641.htm

An Iraqi television director has allegedly been shot dead by US troops after driving near a military convoy in Baghdad, according to colleagues and a hospital official.

Ahmad Wail Bakri, a programme director for al-Sharqiya television, was reportedly trying to pass a traffic accident in the Sayyidiyya district on Tuesday when troops allegedly opened fire at his car, according to Riyadh al-Salman, a director of production at the station.

The US military said it had no immediate reports of the incident, but most US military convoys, which are often targets for attack, have signs on the rear vehicles warning drivers and people to keep their distance.

Bakri, who was in his 30s, also worked for al-Iraqiya television, according to his colleagues at both stations. He had been on his way to visit his in-laws at the time of the shooting, al-Salman said.

The French watchdog organisation Reporters Without Borders has called for an investigation into Bakri's death.

17. He worked for al-Sharqiya television
I don't know that this proves anything, one way or another, but the station doesn't seem to be in the lap of the occupaton, as you can tell from the pointed questions in the interview below.

Here are some snips from an interview with Negroponte broadcast on the station (just the questions, to give a flavour of the station - Negroponte's answers are pretty standard boilerplate):

U.S. Embassy Baghdad
Public Affairs Office

TRANSCRIPT OF AMBASSADOR NEGROPONTE’S INTERVIEW WITH AL-SHARQIYA TV

FEBRUARY 6, 2005

Q: Don’t you think that you are repeating the same mistake of helping religious extremist forces in Iraq, just as you did before the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, when you helped extremist forces there? How will you deal with the new elected political leadership?
...
Q: Do you think that now is the time to start a dialogue with the Iraqi resistance, and start dealing with them as actual forces? It affects your office, one way or another. Didn’t you do the same thing before, when you recognized the resistance in Vietnam?
...
Q: There are rumors and indicators about the departure of some U.S. forces from Iraq. When do you think you will leave? Usually your answer is 'we will leave when Iraqi forces are ready to take security responsibilities,' is that correct?
...
Q: What are your criteria for assessing the readiness of Iraqi security forces to assume security responsibilities? Especially given that General Richard Myers said that 'we spent decades evaluating our military abilities, and it looks even more difficult in Iraq'?
....
Q: On Feb. 15, 2003, you a member of the American delegation at the United Nations Security Council, when Secretary Powell showed his irrefutable evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Were you convinced about this evidence then? Do you feel guilty now that the evidence appeared to have been fabricated?
...
Q: Do you think Iraq has political sovereignty?
...
Q: So, here we sit in the garden of the American Embassy. This palace is the Iraqi Republican Palace. Don’t you think that this gives clear indication that you still have control in Iraq?

I would fall out of my chair if I heard pointed questions like that being asked of anyone on American TV.

24. Just to be clear, the questioner isn't the one who was killed
The victim of the shooting was an executive of the TV channel in question, while the one who was interviewing Negroponte was presumably a reporter. But it does give some insight into the editorial policy of the station in general, and therefore the management. One could imagine someone wanting him out of the way (or wanting to send a message to the station), although the circumstances of the shooting have not been released, so it is just speculation. Context, I guess, for understanding the story as it develops.

Wife of Iraqi television producer Ahmed Wael Bakri looks at her husband's coffin during his funeral procession in Baghdad yesterday. Bakri was shot dead by US forces while driving ``too close'' to their military convoy a day earlier in southern Baghdad, an Iraqi interior ministry official said.
