80-Something nabbed in Hooker Ring
LINDENWOLD, N.J. - Police made a surprising discovery when they busted the alleged madam of a prostitution ring called "August Playmates": The woman running the show was an 80-year-old grandmother.

Authorities arrested Vera Tursi last month during a sting operation to crack down on prostitution rings posing as legal escort services. Police say Tursi ran the business from her two-bedroom apartment, taking $60 of every $160 she charged clients for one hour with a call girl.

Law enforcement officials say Tursi admitted her role in the business, saying she took it over a few years ago from her daughter, who had died. Police say Tursi told them she needed money to subsidize her Social Security checks.

Nice, huh? Resorting to being a madam to make ends meet for an 80 year old grandmother?

1. Free enterprise conservatives should support this
Where is the Heritage Foundation to lecture us about the virtues of the marketplace?

Crickets...

Wasn't Heidi Fleiss's old boss an old woman too? She did quite well for herself actually.

2. Yeah, just think
If she didn't run the Hooker stable, she might have had to choose between eating dog food or getting medication.

As Harry Chapin put it in the song "There Only Was Choice."

"Step right up young lady. Your two hundred birthdays make you old if not senile/And we see the symptoms there in your rigor mortis smile/With your old folks eating dog food and your children eating paint/While the pirates own the flag and sell us sermons on restraint.

And while blood's the only language that your deaf old ears can hear/And still you will not answer with that message coming clear.
Does it mean there's no more ripples in your tired old glory stream/And the buzzards own the carcass of your dream?"

Wow. . .nothing's changed!!!

14. Another Harry Chapin statement between songs at a concert
As late singer/songwriter Harry Chapin said, "You can't expect rich people to do much, because they're just holding onto their money, and you really can't expect poor people to do much, because they're struggling like hell to make do. It really comes down to people like you and I."

3. In theory, you're right but, in reality, prostitution often victimizes...
...the women who practice it. Would that they were all like Jamie Lee Curtis in Trading Places--self confident, pragmatic, etc. But, of course, that's not the case.

4. Then this is what you do
21 year old age limit
Government licensing and regulation
Mandatory STD testing every 6 months
All workers required to carry license, ID and test papers
Unionization for all workers in the business

6. I like your conditions, bluestateguy, and would add only that it should be
heavily taxed, with the proceeds going to insure universal health coverage for all.

8. All of that is good...
...but, until sex workers, exotic dancers, etc., are no longer seen as members of a lower caste, the stigma associated with those jobs will continue to victimize women. I'm not saying it that won't, or can't, change. In my mother's day, for example, divorced women were shunned by society. That taboo is, thankfully, a thing of the past, now.

11. There were still other times when the only educated women were
prostitutes, on the notion that the well-to-do and better-educated clients preferred lively and informed conversation along with more traditional services.

To the extent that religion(s) has made sex a sin, prostitutes have become lower-caste. Certainly they are as human as anyone else and accordingly, deserve full human consideration. "Sinners" are shunned or excommunicated or shipped out of town on the next bus.

5. I'm against Bush's plan to gut Social Security, in favor of MUCH better --
-- care for the elderly, and also in favor of legalized, heavily taxed, and health-monitored prostitution.

No 80-year old should have to break the law to buy food and medicine.

I hope the Bush administration is proud of itself.

9. I'm guessing that, if money changes hands specifically for sex...
...it becomes prostitution. I read somewhere that the women of a particular call girl service never charged for sex. They just charged for condoms--some condoms being more expensive than others.

The only potential victim in this scenario is the john who is getting gouged for being horny.

19. We are nabbing more hookers than terrorists!!!
Is this what the dept of homeland security is "investigating"...?

How many terrorists have we nabbed in the past 12 months compared to # of hookers...that would be an interesting juxtaposition...

25. hookers are a terrorist plot to undermine our superior morality
Now, if only we could ban people buying other people drinks. That's only one degree away from prostitution, which is one degree awy from terrorism, which is one degree away from communism, which is one degree away from atheism, which is one degree away from Kevin Bacon.
