SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - A U.S. military jury found a Navy commando innocent Thursday of charges stemming from a 2003 incident in which members of his SEAL platoon beat a suspected Iraqi insurgent before handing the prisoner over to the CIA where he died in custody.

Navy Lt. Andrew Ledford had faced more than 11 years in prison had he been convicted at the court-martial on charges of assault, conduct unbecoming an officer, making false statements and dereliction of duty.

The case stemmed from a predawn raid by Ledford's SEAL platoon in Baghdad in November 2003 that seized Manadel al-Jamadi from his apartment and delivered him to U.S. intelligence interrogators.

excerpt:

One case involves Manadel al-Jamadi, believed to be the dead man over whose body two soldiers posed with smiles and thumbs-up in pictures published last week.

He died on November 4 of "blunt force injuries complicated by compromised respiration", doctors said, during interrogation when two CIA personnel and a civilian contract translator were among those present.

There was no abuse and murder, so quit saying that! :sarcasm:

2. NPR gave different slant: couldn't prove he did it
They said that the dead person was dead, had been alive when taken and beaten in a van. However, they had no eyewitness to this man actually beating him or giving the ok to his troop to beat him. He said they were in an extreme combat zone with high tensions and his troops were running on adrenaline when they beat this guy. He did not dispute that fact that his troops beat him and he died from the beating. They just could not come up with an eye witness saying he did it. bah.

6. "no eye witness"
They saw the dead guy live being taken into the van. The soldier guy said his men got carried away by adrenaline and beat on him. They tribunal/court couldn't find an eye witness who would say the soldier guy laid his hands on the dead guy, or told his men it was ok to do so. The guy was alive. He's now dead. But they couldn't find a witness. On the 1 hand, it is innocent until proven guilty. On the other hand, military tribunal is guilty until proven innocent. On the third hand, the guy is dead and the military guy was responsible. On the fourth hand, they didn't stick it to an underling. On the fifth hand, I remember Ollie North. I hate these guys.

3. Just remember that if we have to really fight a war again
where we don't hold all of the cards then the poor Grunt, Pilot, Truck driver, etc, etc that gets caught and becomes a POW will not have the Geneva Conventions there to protect him due to the Bush Administrations throttling of that accord and it subsequent death! Hey the US don't obey it why should we!!!!!!

5. The SOBs who committed this murder
will have to live with their tainted consciences for the rest of their lives. This is the only comfort one can get out of this act of evil.

7. Unfortunately these people have no Conscience..
So that means that NO ONE is going to actually be held accountable for any of these tortures?

Not only has Bush lowered the bar, but the military now has NO HONOR.

Even when I got drafted and wanted nothing to do with the military, for the most part they had a code of ethics.

I get really depressed sometimes because Bush and his den of thieves have created an ethos that has spread so far that it seems as if very nearly NO ONE has any scruples or ethics anymore.

I thought the 80's were bad, now we're surrounded by idiotic hate spewing zombie vending units - Like Hunter Thompson said, A nation of used car salesmen who will screw anyone and kill anyone that tries to reduce their level of comfort.

The DU is an oasis in this sea of infamy.

If there is a Hell these people need to rot there for eternity, and I hope that what I believe turns out to be true - that what you do to others is made apparent to you when you die, you get to feel the suffering you have caused to anyone and from their viewpoint and physical pain. That would be Hell.

Heaven is all the love you've spread around, and how many people you've made happy - you get to feel all that instead, if of course that's how you've lived..

so these people are screwed if my God wins :)
