Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) seeks to amass 100,000 signatures from U.S. citizens calling on President Bush for more answers about a 2002 meeting during which a senior British official said intelligence was "being fixed" to present a case for the Iraq war, RAW STORY has learned.

The congressman's office says Conyers hopes to present the letter to the President in person, in what may be a media event; they believe the letter could have a "viral effect" and spark new interest in the steps taken by the Bush Administration in the run-up to the Iraq war and the so-called "Downing Street Memo."

I was listening to C-span Washington Journal this morning. A guy called in and basically said;' Two other callers asked same question yesterday and you did not answer. So I am asking you again? What is Downing Street memo?'

Downing Street Memo. The freepers are saying they're the same memo, but the news item about the forged letter has quotes absent from the Downing Street Memo and the real Downing Street memo and the forged letter are signed by different people.

The link the freepers are offering as "proof" of forgery is a Yahoo story describing a faked document circulated to Brit newspapers Fri April 29, purporting to be legal advice from the UK Attorney General, Peter Goldsmith, advising Blair that the Iraq war would be illegal. (There had been a controversy in the UK about whether his legal advice should be published, and in the event real documents were published, from Goldsmith and a resignation letter from one of the staff at his office.. But this faked one was never published.)

In short:

fake memo: from Peter Goldsmith, to Blair, "legal advice", circulated Apr 29th, never published in the UK press.

real memo: from Matthew Rycroft, to many individuals, minutes of a meeting between Blair and advisors, published in The Sunday Times (London), May 1.

At first, though, I thought this would actually go to the Resident, and had that feeling like, oh great, now we've actually given them a list of people to target, and was horrified that I was signing something to go to that person. Why even dignify that person with a letter as if he could or would read it and respond like a human being? Donated to Conyers as well. I've watched this American patriot since he first got my attention during the Clinton impeachment debacle. Watched all the Judiciary hearings on CSPAN at that time and he and the other Dems on the Judiciary were standing up for the Constitution and Rule of Law while all the rethugs were undermining it but making all these "patriotic" speeches -- the liars and phonies. Please, for those who brand all Dems as corrupt because a few are, take a look at the bravery of Conyers and the other Democrats on the Judiciary (and so many others in Congress). Conyers character never changes, his bravery never falters.

229. Why two domains?

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but can someone explain to me why the John Conyers site is running on two different domains. I've become the suspicious sort in the past 5 years or so. There is the legitimate johnconyers.com, a domain registered in his name in Virginia.

This petition link is also being passed around as being located at johnconyers.campaignoffice.com. Campaignoffice.com is registered through Godaddy.com by:
