My Comment: Bill must not have received the FBI memo:
Eco-militants are greatest terrorist threat, warns FBI

Frist Speaks at Medical School Graduation

Friday May 20, 2005 4:31 PM

By BRUCE SMITH

Associated Press Writer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told graduates of the Medical University of South Carolina on Friday that the most dangerous threat to the American people is biological.

``Imagine a terrorist contagious with smallpox, sitting in the international lounge of an airport in New York or Paris or Beijing,'' Frist, a surgeon, said in remarks prepared for the graduation. ``Think of the sweep of death and destruction.''

Frist noted that intestinal diseases kill millions of children in the world each year, that 1.2 billion people have no access to clean water, that malaria remains a major killer in the world and the death toll from HIV/AIDS is now 23 million worldwide.

``Just as we unleash the power of freedom around the world, so too must we unleash the power of medicine and the caring, compassion and healing that comes with it,'' he said.

3. Don't forget to tell them what happens if they sweat, Doc!
and by "Doc" I mean partisan quack.

"STEPHANOPOULOS: Now you're a doctor. Do you believe that tears and sweat can transmit HIV?
FRIST: I don't know. I can tell you --
STEPHANOPOULOS: You don’t know?
FRIST: I can tell you things like, like --
STEPHANOPOULOS: Wait. Let me stop you there. You don't know that, you believe that tears and sweat might be able to transmit AIDS?
FRIST: Yeah, no, I can tell you that HIV is not very transmissible as an element, like compared to smallpox, compared to the flu, it's not.
(snip)
STEPHANOPOULOS: ...Let me just clear this up though, do you or do you not believe that tears and sweat can transmit HIV?
FRIST: It would be very hard...for tears and sweat to -- I mean, you can get virus in tears and sweat. But in terms of the degree of infecting somebody, it would be very hard."

12. You may be right. Kitty Hawk, NC isn't nearly far enough.
This would have been an ideal launch for Operation Meow: get a bunch of people to dress up like the road company of a certain long-running Broadway play (one DUer even suggested adding a halo!) and meowing up a storm wherever 9-Lives makes a public appearance.

9. Yes, we unleash the power of medicine and the caring,
compassion and healing that comes with it. Must be faith healing, because if you need a medical doctor here, and you don't have health insurance, it's "Die, M-F."

10. Once again, Fristy is outside his expertise and hasn't done his homework.
``Imagine a terrorist contagious with smallpox, sitting in the international lounge of an airport in New York or Paris or Beijing,'' Frist, a surgeon, said in remarks prepared for the graduation. ``Think of the sweep of death and destruction.''

But what does the most recent research say and shouldn't Fristy be talking about that when he addresses future doctors?

Computer Simulations Help Reduce Smallpox Threat

snip

But with the help of computers, many researchers are concluding that a smallpox attack by terrorists need not produce an uncontrollable public health crisis. Computer simulations show that the proper combination of post-attack vaccination, quarantine and other health measures could stop smallpox in its tracks:

A model designed by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that vaccination and quarantine could stop an outbreak within a year and limit the number of smallpox cases to 4,200 - even if 1,000 people were directly infected by terrorists.

Researchers from Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found through another simulation that a massive vaccination program launched as soon as the first smallpox cases were detected could quickly stop the disease from spreading and limit infections to fewer than two times the initial number.

11. Someone should publish a list...
of all who attended this so that none of us goes to them (I wouldn't want a freeper as my doctor)-I'm assuming any "normal" person would have not gone to their own graduation rather than have to listen to Frist. I don't care how much I would have been anxious to go to my graduation-any member of BushCo would have made me change my mind quickly.
