LAT: Faith 'War' Rages in U.S., Judge Says
WASHINGTON — Just days after a bitterly divided Senate committee voted along party lines to approve her nomination as a federal appellate court judge, California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown told an audience Sunday that people of faith were embroiled in a "war" against secular humanists who threatened to divorce America from its religious roots, according to a newspaper account of the speech.

Brown's remarks come as a partisan battle over judges has evolved into a national debate over the proper mix of God and government and as Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) ponders changing the chamber's rules to prevent Democrats from using procedural moves to block confirmation of conservative jurists such as Brown.

Her comments to a gathering of Roman Catholic legal professionals in Darien, Conn., came on the same day as "Justice Sunday: Stop the Filibuster Against People of Faith," a program produced by evangelical leaders and simulcast on the Internet and in homes and churches around the country. It was designed to paint opponents of Bush's judicial nominees as intolerant of believers.

Though unrelated to that program, Brown's remarks sounded similar themes.

2. How do people like this become judges in the first place?
I thought only smart people could get into law school.

10. i just had my last law school class yesterday
after three years, i am sorry to report that: no, you don't have to be smart. While a number of classmates are, ther are many others who are not; I cant imagine what it must be like at a lower-tier school....

What's scarier is that the bulk of the folks - even the 'smart' ones on law review - i would not trust with my personal affairs....

3. Frist then of course quickly conceded...
And backed away into his corner to avoid damnation by the religious right, while trying to foster up a more clever scheme to gain the public's tax dollars.

8. Clergy for judges
Reversing the developments that led France and Britain to become democratic nations.

This country wasn't founded on sectarianism. That is the greatest falsehood the panderers of despotism are selling.

9. A little bit off topic... but I think it has something to do with the
Just us sunday, there were guys at the doors of the community college my mother and I attend yesterday, handing out bibles. (I didn't see it, but she did) Has anyone else noticed stuff like this? We live in Massachusetts so it was very strange, and really pissed her off.

14. You were beset by the Gideons.
They're a large and well-funded evangelical group that specializes in giving away bibles. Sometimes they go to schools (I've seen them at colleges in Oregon and in Indiana).

Another project of theirs is to put bibles in every hotel room. As the Beatles sang, Gideon left his bible, no doubt, to help with poor young Rocky's revival.

My take on the Gideons is that they're harmless, they have a unique mission and as far as I know aren't a direct part of the religious-political crap going on. They get their funding from evangelical churches, which will perhaps once a year in each congregation take up a special collection for them. (The only bad thing about them I know of is that their bibles sometimes have introductory material in them that will include homophobic statements, i.e., where to find verses in the bible that are against homosexuality.)

I wonder if she believes in slavery as well, that was acceptable in the Old Testament.

12. The Inquisition
The Inquisition - Part II is coming to our country!

As we step backwards and the american version of the taliban take over our country, why aren't more people taking to the streets?

Are we all scared? Are we sheep?

I guess we are. So in the long run, we will get what these zealots want. A religious state in which their version of god, and gods word is law. Now this raises some other questions, such as which religious group is right...

This ought to be fun to watch, long as I am not burned at the stake for crimes against _____________ fill in the blank.

As we descend into the abyss, I hope that history lays the destruction of our country at the feet of the NEOCONs and their waterboy, Pres. Bush and his allies in the senate and house.

Wish I cound come back in 100 years and see the long term outcome.

So, I guess the only thing left to do is organize harder and try to get people off their asses and get involved.

13. Framing: here we go again
The thugs are creating frames that say differences between neocons and progressives are differences of religion. What a clever way to distract Americans from the very real economic divisions in our country.

Could the right wing really be seeking judges who are friendly to corporations and businesses and rich people? I doubt they truly give a rat's ass about abortion and stem cell research issues. This is merely a smokescreen for the real reason they want conservative judges. They want judges who will rule against plaintiffs suing big corporations. Judges who will help rich guys - such as Enron execs - avoid punishment for economic crimes.

We need to stop accepting their "religious differences" frame and change the debate to one of "who's getting the money and who isn't." Oil company profits are soaring, while we average folks are getting screwed by rising pump prices. Corporate executives give each other obscenely large bonuses, while laying off workers and cutting benefits for those that remain.

19. Could be true for the judges, but
I'm not so sure it's the case for repug senators. I think that "activist judges" is a code word for "gay rights" and "women's rights," which they are trying to strip away from us.

21. Talk about activist judges.
Maybe, she ought to read Jefferson's Bible to see just how "religious" our founding fathers were. Too bad our country skirted around the Age of Reason.
