Judge (Pickering) blocked by filibuster calls it unconstituional tactic
BRETT BARROUQUERE

Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A retired federal judge whose promotion to an appellate court was blocked by a Senate filibuster called the tactic unconstitutional and said it should be ended permanently if it is used again.

Charles Pickering of Mississippi made the comments in Louisville's Highview Baptist Church, a few hours before a rally was to start aimed at getting churchgoers to protest the filibuster of nominees for the federal judiciary.

"Justice Sunday," organized by the conservative Family Research Council, was scheduled to feature a videotaped speech by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist rallying churchgoers to protest the filibuster tactic.

Other conservatives are scheduled to speak at the church, including R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family.

4. No shit. As if his racist tendencies are not reason enough...that asinine
statement about the "unconstitutionality" of the Senate filibuster is total disqualification material. What a MORAN!

8. OK let me get this straight
accroding to pickering filibusters are unconstitutional..yet John Q. Adams used it when he was in the House of Representatives, Henry Clay (Of Kentucky) used it when he was in the Senate, Strom Thurmond used it.
So, it was used by at least one man who was alive when the Constitution was written (Adams), it was used by a man who knew the Senate rules inside and out (Henry Clay) and it was used by a man who served in the House and Senate longer than any other man (or woman) EVER! (Thurmond)
But, this loser Pickering knows the Constitution better than they do.

21. Well, that was just to keep them from coming out of committee but...still.
BTW, notice that's the same year as DeLay's quote about lobbyist-paid vacations?

Only took the Repugs 10 years to become absolutely corrupted.

22. Correction: It Took 10 Years
to show that the GOP remained corrupted continuously since Watergate, and has only gotten bolder and moreso.

10. Time for the Churches to pay up, if they can mix politics with religion
then it is time to ante up the taxes no more FREE rides.

11. the churches are still okay with the IRS
they're only advocating a position not a candidate

as much as I hate saying that, it's the truth

anyway, do you honestly think that Bush's IRS would investigate the greatest source of the Repuke base

15. Pickering got the position anyway
If memory serves me correctly, Bush appointed Pickering to the position while Congress was in recess. Oddly enough, he resigned just a few short weeks later with nary a word as to WHY he left. You'd think the liberal media would investigate that. :eyes:

19. The recess appointment wasn't for a very long term
I haven't looked it up but if I remember correctly, there wasn;t much time left in the Congressional session and his appointment expired when Congress adjourned.

I don't remember him actually resigning before that term expired but I could definitely be wrong.

In any case, he never deserved to be on the Federal bench!

20. Pickering called the press conf. at 2:30 to pre-empt the REAL rally
A Chicago Tribune writer told me yesterday at the Freedom and Faith rally at Louisville's Central Presbyterian Church that when the mini-Six Flags Over Jesus found out about the early TRUE Justice Sunday rally, they scheduled a press conference that could *only* be held at 2:30. That pulled some of the press away from covering the Freedom and Faith rally.

Disgusting.
