Jesuit School Blasted for Naming Liberal Former Gov. Commencement Speaker
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBN1HMYL7E.html

SEATTLE (AP) - A conservative Catholic group is lashing out at Seattle University for picking former Gov. Gary Locke to deliver this year's commencement speech, saying his support for abortion rights, same-sex partner benefits and other causes clashes with church doctrine.
In a statement on the Jesuit university's Web site this week, the school's president, the Rev. Stephen J. Sundborg, praised Locke for his work to improve education, welfare reform and trade. "The integrity and compassion that underlie (his) accomplishments exemplify the values of Seattle University," Sundborg said.

However, Sundborg's decision drew blistering comments from Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society based in Manassas, Va.

"Integrity and compassion? Not from a Catholic point of view!" Reilly said in a statement on his group's Web site. "Locke is a steadfast enemy of defenseless preborn children and all those who would protect their lives."

1. Seattle is a truely liberal city....
Even conservative Christian schools like Seattle U. don't do the
fundamentalist goose-step.

3. Good for them (the Jesuits)
Thanks to my superb Jesuit education where critical thinking and the pursuit of truth was paramount, I escaped becoming just another of the brain-dead mindless sheeple! Some of the smartest people I ever met in my life were Jesuit priests.

14. The Jesuits aren't opposed to a liberal speaker...
They're the ones who invited him to speak. Some knee-jerk Republican front with a saint's name is opposed to Locke's appearance.

Good post PSPS. I didn't attend a Jesuit university, but I have known a few and they tend to be the very brightest. Actually, it would be very tough for an individual to be an intelligent seeker of what is good and true - and a neocon. I believe that many neocons are probably quite bright - they're just liars and manipulators. They use their intelligence to manipulate the masses in an effort to enrich themselves at the expense of those born with less. They could care less about all these "moral" issues they claim to be concerned about. It's all about duping the masses, seizing the levers of government, and money.

7. What PSPS said!
"Some of the smartest people I ever met in my life were Jesuit priests."

Good on them and good on you, PSPS!

My wife invited me to attend services with her congregation, led by the Jesuits of the University of Detroit-Mercy. We went to Mass on the campus, where a small chapel was home to a closely knit community ranging from professors of law to the people from the local neighborhood. They made me feel welcome from Day One.

After dating for a year, my wife and I were privileged to have been married by one of the leading priests of the Society of Jesus. He also, I am honored to say, also baptised our two kids. Among his many pursuits, Father Art was an expert on Liberation Theology. He also was a scratch golfer.

Father Art's been gone about four years now. God, we miss him so.

BTW: A hearty welcome to DU, PSPS! Thanks for stating what I've always believed and known.

17. You're right.
Two of the three decent priests I've met in my lifetime were Jesuits, and yes, they were a lot smarter than the rest of the bunch.

Why a group in right wing Virginia feels compelled or even entitled to comment on anything that goes on in liberal Seattle is the height of arogance.

What the hell is wrong with Virginia? That state is the Kansas of the east coast!

They are among the original speakers of truth to power.

You will never see a Jesuit Pope, because they feel their role is to hoist the bullshit flag if they ever see the leadership going too far off the page,

8. Exactly
Growing up, groups like the Catholic League or this Newman gang were taken with huge grains of salt. They were the fringe wackos.

The Jesuits have a long history of independent thought. Good for them on that. But I'm troubled by the seeming (it could just be a very loud minority) resurgence of extremely conservative Catholic voices, demanding to define just what "catholic" means.

28. I gave up any hope years ago
which is why I'm now an Episcopalian.

My parents report a new and much more conservative priest at my old church. The pastor I grew up with was pretty cool. Therefore, the bishop didn't much care for him, and forced him to retire (though he didn't want to) at 72. All this ultra-conservative stuff is just a new face of R Catholicism to me -- not what I grew up with at all!

6. "... a steadfast enemy of defenseless preborn children"
Until the Catholic priesthood is completely cleansed of the pedophile priests who prey on children after they're born and adequate compensation has been made to all their victims, Patrick J. Reilly should just shut his fucking mouth.

IMHO.

19. Newman House finds my new addresses before anyone else
It's mystically bizarre. I went to the Newman House church on my campus ONCE during my freshman year, when I was relapsing from my lapsed catholic status. One whif of the incense reminded me why I dumped the practice in high school, and I've never been in a church since (except for funerals - i don't even attend wedding masses!). Let me reiterate: ONCE!!!

Nevertheless, I get fundraising crap from Newman House everywhere I go, and I've moved around a lot. They always find me first. Five years ago I sent them money explaining that I was a hard-core atheist, and here's some money if you never send any fundraising stuff to me again. I got another letter six months later.

From all this I've determined that the Cardinal Newman Society is more insidious and powerful than the FBI. They should be enlisted to track down fugitives. Here's the kicker: I'm pretty sure I didn't even give them my NAME the ONE TIME I went. Weird...

I reread what I posted. It was quite broad brush. They're my words. I own them. But that isn't what I really meant. I was refering to the nuts in those sects .... and that is surely not all of them. And maybe not even the majority of them.

Consider my brush narrowed.

Bozell is the person said to have filed 99.8% of all FCC indecency complaints in 2003

"Brent Bozell, a zealot of impeccable right-wing pedigree, is the nephew of columnist William F. Buckley and the son of L. Brent Bozell, Jr., who assisted Barry Goldwater with the writing of Conscience of a Conservative."

is the Cardinal Newman Society well known?

or is just another sensational AP article involving another tax exempt sensationalist right-wing organization pushing a coordinated, radical agenda??

... "blasted" ... "liberal"

Its "president", Patrick J. Reilly, "is a contributor to Mandate for Charity: Policy Proposals for the Bush Administration (Capital Research Center, 2001), and his research is cited in Kenneth Timmerman’s bestseller Shakedown: Exposing the Real Jesse Jackson (Regnery Publishing, 2002)."

He founded Cardinal Newman Society in 1993, two years after graduating from University
