A survey of Australian attitudes to foreign policy has revealed more than two-thirds of people believe Australia pays too much attention to the United States.
The study has been released by the Lowy Institute for International Policy, an independent think-tank.
The survey of 1,000 people has revealed some views which the group says contradict common perceptions. Sixty-eight per cent of people say Australia pays too much regard to the US in its foreign policy.
Institute director Alan Gyngell says leaders may have to rebuild support for the US-Australian alliance."That rebuilding certainly involves increasing the understanding and analysis of the United States in Australia," he said.
The poll shows 90 per cent of Australians feel safe or very safe in the context of world events, with nuclear proliferation and global warming their main concerns.
