Hughes's Role to Be Outreach to Muslims
---------------------------------
Associated Press
Tuesday, March 15, 2005; Page A21
---------------------------------

Declaring that the United States "must do a better job of engaging the Muslim world," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice introduced former presidential adviser Karen Hughes yesterday as the Bush administration's choice for a State Department post designed to change Islamic perceptions about America.

(snip)

From the White House, President Bush said "spreading the universal principle of human liberty" is key to changing the conditions that spawn terrorism and thus a crucial part of the nation's long-term security strategy.

"This will require an aggressive effort to share and communicate America's fundamental values while respecting the cultures and traditions of other nations," Bush said in a statement. "Karen Hughes has been one of my most trusted and closest advisers, and she has the experience, expertise and judgment to lead this critical effort."

(snip)

Introducing Hughes at the State Department, Rice said the United States must do much more to counter the "hateful propaganda" that is so common in the Islamic world.

8. Heh. They already tried this once.
Remember Charlotte Beers? Advertising bigwig, hired sometime after Afghanistan for pretty much the same thing.

Thing is, dear ol' Charlotte forgot the cardinal rule of advertising: You can polish a turd all you want, but it's still gonna be a turd.

Bush foreign policy is a turd. A big, steaming one, and it's not going to change, no matter how many times Hughes gets on TV and spews her garbage. I don't care how many times you tell me you're a nice family guy--if you keep letting your dog crap in my yard, setting my garage on fire and trying to fondle my daughter, no amount of friendly hellos is going to change what you are.

16. I think the answer is
What's happened is a lot of good career people at State including moderate Republicans are so disgusted by the incompetence and politicization of the Bushies that they've left. The woman who left this post vacant was one such person. It's more than a shame, it's scary how seriously they're botching this.

13. She isnt needed. Media whores like Anderson Cooper do it for them.
Anderson Cooper made me puke tonight. He was wandering around a Lebanese "freedom" rally, spewing all sorts of Bush-loving remarks. His cameraman focused (dwelt, actually) on marchers cheering America, towing the PNAC line. He even braoadcasted their fake crowd estimates of 2 million, or whatever, trying to make the Hizbollah rally last week look smaller.

Cooper has drunk the Shrubco Kool-Aid, and is on my shit-list from now on.

I am a woman and I hate saying this, but a woman negotiating with the Muslim world is a joke. They keep their women in burqa's (sp?), how much respect can they have for women? Bush* once again shows complete ignorance of the Muslim world.

33. At least two muslim countries
have had women leaders (e.g. Benazir Bhutto, Prime Minister of Pakistan) and the Palestinians also had a woman spokesperson a couple of years ago, so I don't think it particularly matters that it's a woman.

Also, the "burqa" is native to Afghanistan only, so to imply that all muslim women wear burqas is not accurate.

40. Hardly.
There are strong Muslim women, active in politics. And I'm sure there are strong Muslim-American women who would make great reps. As well as Muslim men with US roots. There are even quite a few Muslims in Texas--if Bush really wanted to keep it "local."

She is unfit because of who she is.

hate rhetoric used so freely by her president against the 'evil empires'. Bush has shown little regard and respect for the cultures and traditions of those 'terrorist nations'(as he chooses to call them). Better work on the hateful propaganda that is so common in the Western world, Ms. Hughes.

26. I'm certainly no political expert...
but one way to improve relations would be to stop killing Muslims, and threatening others. Backing up Sharon every time he gets all warlike and aggressive doesn't help much, either.

It's hard to get people to believe you're trying to spread the concept of liberty when you bomb the shit out of a country who didn't attack you, then kill, maim, and torture it's citizens, and leave the place a wasteland.

Somehow, I just don't think Mommy Karen is going to change any perceptions at all. It might also be a good thing if someone could convince Chimp that just because he's stupid, doesn't mean that Muslims are. They know only too well what he's doing, he's robbing their countries blind.
