An explosion has torn through a funeral procession at a Shia mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul causing many casualties, witnesses said.

Early reports say at least 19 bodies have arrived at the mortuary in the mainly Sunni Muslim city.

US troops have cordoned off the area near the mosque.

MOSUL, Iraq - A suicide bomber blew himself up Thursday inside a Shiite mosque in the northern city of Mosul, and a hospital official said the death toll was at least 30 people.

American troops cordoned off the area near the mosque.

The attack took place during a funeral, witnesses said.

“As we were inside the mosque, we saw a ball of fire and heard a huge explosion,” said Tahir Abdullah Sultan, 45. “After that blood and pieces of flesh were scattered around the place.”

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Shiite mosque in the northern city of Mosul on Thursday, killing at least 36 people, hospital officials said.


"As we were inside the mosque, we saw a ball of fire and heard a huge explosion," said Tahir Abdullah Sultan, 45. "After that blood and pieces of flesh were scattered around the place."


The attack took place in the northeastern Tameem neighborhood during a funeral, witnesses said. The U.S. military that controls the area could not immediately be reached for comment.


Mosul has been a hotbed of insurgent activity and the scene of many bombings, drive-by shootings and assassinations against the country's security services, Shiite majority and people thought to be working with U.S.-led forces.

...are going to catch on. Haven't there been a couple others lately? I guess the thinking is that there will most certainly be large gatherings of people at funerals so they make good targets. That is a truly horrible postition to put these people in: commit a bombing attack which will result in funerals and then attack the funerals. Shit.
