NEW ORLEANS (AP) — U.S. Rep. Jim McCrery's campaign committee persuaded a Shreveport cable ad company to pull an ad criticizing him for taking money from Wall Street firms that would profit from private Social Security accounts.
Roger Hickey, codirector of the liberal nonprofit group Campaign for America's Future, said it received a fax from LifeWise Cable Media, saying it had withdrawn the ad from Shreveport's cable system.
"We were very dismayed they wouldn't wait for a response from us," Hickey said. "It's troubling that a powerful member of Congress can just call up a cable system and get an ad yanked because he doesn't like it even before the citizens paying for that ad have a chance to respond."
He said he was about to send his response backing up the ad's statement that McCrery, chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, "wants to privatize Social Security and cut our guaranteed benefits."
"I'm hopeful these are good supporters of the First Amendment who run this cable system, and as soon as they get their documentation from us they'll resume running the ad," he said.
