Democrats blast Gibbons’ comments about liberals
Lord, do we have a whack job running around Congress and Nevada.

Nevada Democrats are decrying a speech given last week by U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Reno, in which he condemned “tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals” for their opposition to the war in Iraq.

Gibbons, a possible contender for governor in 2006, made the remarks at a Lincoln Day dinner Friday in Elko, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.

While praising the efforts of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gibbons accused liberals, movie stars and song makers of “trying to divide this country.”

“I say we tell those liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and their music and whine somewhere else,” he told the crowd, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.

He then said it was “too damn bad we didn’t buy them a ticket” to become human shields in Iraq.

67. well, he knows I think he is an asshat now. I forwarded this story out
in an email to many people I know ...I called Gibbons an asshat in it. One of the gentlemen I sent it to, forwarded it to Gibbons wife talking about how the Gibbons lied to him about social security and other things over the weekend in another town hall meeting ...this should get interesting. I have to deal with this man in my job and he now knows I think he is an ASSHAT!!!

75. no, and I think the frenzy of becoming Governor is going to get him
in trouble and we are going to hear more and more of his stupid statements. He sort of reminds me of that one guy who ran for Governor a few years ago who was a movie director. Gibbons and his crew supported him. He was gonzo! But not as dumb as Gibbons.

It was the Shovel Brigade and the Jarbidge Rebellion. Gibbons was the token politician in the battle to fight the feds!!! DAHUM!!!

I was there on the sidewalk, watching as over 1,000 rabid right wingers carrying shovels marched down the main street of our town carrying shovels and there was this gigantic shovel on the Elko County courthouse steps that they worshipped. I remember telling a woman who worked for the Forest Service at the time (she was incognito as the forest service employees were having their lives threatened, etc., at the time) that I felt like I was watching a live march to Young Frankenstein's castle. Remember that scene in "Young Frankenstein"?? The peasants with the torches marching up to the castle? It was freaking surreal!!!

Here's a story of the Jarbidge Rebellion. I am still trying to find a photo of the giant shovel and Gibbons.

16. True . . .
From the bio on his website:

Prior to coming to Congress, Gibbons gained a distinguished military background. A former combat pilot and decorated veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, Congressman Gibbons served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and graduated from the USAF Air Command and Staff College as well as the Air War College. Attaining the rank of Colonel, Gibbons joined the Nevada Air Guard in 1975, and served as the group's Vice Commander from 1990 through 1996.

Throughout his military service, Gibbons received 19 service medals, including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Aerial Achievement Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his extraordinary achievement while participating as an RF-4C Flight Leader in the Gulf War. On this mission, Gibbons flew his unarmed aircraft on a vital reconnaissance mission to acquire politically sensitive imagery of enemy targets in Kuwait.

52. I submit that the combat vets spewing all the patriotic venom ...
are the ones who are not morally sane.

About five years before my father succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease, he shared with me the circumstances that warranted his receiving a Battlefield Commission during WWII that he maintained until his retirement in 1960. Because I was the only one of his three children to be Commissioned and serve in the Active Duty Army, we were "very close" about the demands of military life.

Like John Kerry, my dad did not spew hatred toward those who did not serve, nor did he color everything red, white and blue in his world.

He told me how the tears welled up in his eyes after he killed several German Soldiers and cried out, "You never did anything to me!" My father never before or after told anyone else about his horrible experiences in combat but it made the hair on the back of my head stand on end.

IMHO the true combat heroes are not the bravado and threatening bozos like Gibbons, but those who return to their families' with humbleness and a newfound respect for humanity. These brave men (and some women now from MP units, etc) KNOW first hand that war is pure horror and immorality played out on the world stage.

60. Perhaps it's the difference between air combat and ground combat.
Combatants on the ground see war, and its human costs, intimately. Whether it's a "grunt," a cook who winds up defending a base under attack, or a nurse treating casualties, the individual who is an eyewitness to the tragic human costs of war is the one who is more likely to have that kind of respect for humanity.

This admin and it's goals fly in the face of everything american. It want's to destroy FDR's new Deal, Teddy Roosevelt's conservationism, JFK's civil tolerance and volunteerism, Carters' progressive environmental conservatism, Jefferson's intellectualism and anti-religionist view...etc, etc, I could think of more american traditionalism that these folks are out to skin and gut and hang from a tree like a carcass, if I really applied myself, but you get the drift. Bush has even destroyed Reagans magnanimity and stature, if you believe he was really was a so-called "great communicator" (which I don't), Bush will instead go down in history as the "great mispronouncer".

Why don't we tell them that if they hate they way america is so badly, then we can have them in Cuba in a matter of hours? I know if the America haters agreed to go, we could hold a fundraiser here and personally get airfare for several hundred of their fat, drooling asses.

So there.

People like this guy just keep getting elected and re-elected and re-elected over and over again. They never go away, they just keep getting voted back in.

66. This man is supposed to represent *all* of his constituents.
But he uses the position to make sweeping insults to anyone who disagrees with him- even suggests that they should be killed.

The arrogance of such a remark really is amazing when you think about it. I hope the Democrats make alot of noise about this openly fascist rhetoric.

79. Nevada Democrats Decry Gibbons' remarks

Las Vegas Sun

"I say we tell those liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and their music and whine somewhere else," he said.

He added it was "too damn bad we didn't buy them a ticket" to become human shields in Iraq.

He is so far to the right of where this state is and where most of the country is," Sinclair said. "It is these kind of bombastic statements that stopped him from being in leadership positions in Congress. Folks haven't been able to trust what he is going to say next."

"I see similar actions on the part of some members of the entertainment community today," he told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "Today, such efforts to break our resolve in Iraq are also used to inspire the insurgents to continue their assault."

Congressman unapologetic about comment that liberals should be Iraq human shields
3/2/2005 @ 9:48 pm EST

Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-NV) is unapologetic for his recent salvo fired at “tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed” liberals who he suggested should be deployed as “human shields” in Iraq, Roll Call’s Mary Ann Akers will report Thursday, RAW STORY has learned.

“Gibbons issued a statement Wednesday defending, rather than apologizing for or clarifying, remarks he made at a Lincoln Day dinner in Elko, Nev,” Akers pens. “He said that as a Vietnam veteran who knows what it’s like to be ostracized by his own people, he was simply trying to defend and support U.S. troops ‘while the new generation of Jane Fondas — people like Michael Moore — deride their efforts.’”

Last Friday, Gibbons excoriated liberals and said it was “too damn bad” the U.S. didn’t buy liberals “a ticket” to become human shields for the “enemy” in Iraq. “I say we tell those liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and whine somewhere else,” Gibbons said.

Of those who wanted to go to Iraq and become human shields for Iraqi citizens, he said, “I say it’s just too damn bad we didn’t buy them a ticket.” “It was all said for the soldiers, Gibbons said in Wednesday’s statement,” Akers writes. “‘I support our troops, and I don’t apologize for that,’ he said.”
